*Located at the rooftop of The Proper Hotel in LA*

Made reservation on Opentable, got seated right away. The view of downtown LA high-rises is fantastic, the hotel pool is on the side, very typical LA scene: pricey, nothing really stood out. Food came out quick: fried chicken ($26) was good albeit on the salty side. Enjoyed my dungeness crab pasta ($37) and husband also liked the skirt steak with salad on the side ($32). We were staying in the hotel so it’s convenient, no complaints….

A 6% “wellness charge” is automatically added on the bill. Server said it’s for back staff insurance (?) and also optional…

$21 Aperol + $7 Diet Coke + 3 items above is $130 + wellness charge + tip for 2 people out the door… just another lunch in LA!

We love dining at Cara Cara between the food, service and the view it is beyond one of our favorite places. Victor is an incredible human being as well.

Time and again, Cara Cara remains one of my favorite spots to show off when we have guests from abroad or out of town. Not just for the delicious food, but also the impressive view onto the DTLA skyline. The staff and the kitchen were very helpful to identify or modify food items to accommodate one guest’s garlic allergy. And despite this modification, everything was very flavorful.
PS: The valet parking guy was either drunk or otherwise loaded but seemed to be very confused.

PREVIOUS REVIEW 2:
Back for another occasion to demonstrate to our foreign guests the beauty of the DTLA foodie scene and L.A. skyline. And again, it was a magnificent experience. Even cocktails this time were delicious – in form of the fruit-based cocktail. All menu items were stellar: White Trumpet Mushroom focaccia, Cara Cara cobb salad, Shrimp Tacos, Piri Piri Chicken, Hangover Burger all wonderful – but the Grilled Branzino in my opinion topped everything.

PREVIOUS REVIEW 1:
Unquestionably, this wonderful rooftop patio on the top of the Proper hotel is not only a cool place with the best and most direct view of the DTLA skyline but it offers a splendid ambiance for a relaxed social gathering with delicious food by Suzanne Goin (who we had known for her fabulous skills from Lucques and A.O.C). We ordered most items in a shared fashion with a few individual exceptions.

The Douro almonds and the marinated olives were excellent starter snacks. The cocktails however did not hit it to say it nicely. We otherwise started with Piri Piri Fried chicken, Vegan antipasto, Hokkaido Scallop Crudo, and cauliflower tacos. The grilled albacore, hangover burger, dried figs and prosciutto focaccia, and the trumpet mushroom focaccia were a touch more substantial and filling. All food items were generally delicious but on occasion could’ve benefited from a tiny touch more salt and flavor.
We skipped desserts except for BD surprise as we did have a major one waiting at home.

Parenthetically, I was told that the the second Goin restaurant at the bottom of the Proper (Caldo Verde) doesn’t have the same great view but serves the better food: to be tested in the near future).

The part that I didn’t like (apart from the cocktails) and which contributed to dropping a star was the uncharming service which was inattentive, hectic like a bee stock, generally little welcoming, and for substantial periods did not seem to care.

Queenie was our server and she was great! Attentive and patient and kind. The ambiance was great, of course. The drinks were good. The food was awful. Everything was bland with little to know flavor. Hands down the worst ceviche I have ever had, I couldn't eat anymore after 3 bites. And my friends ordered fish tacos that they said were flavorless as well. If I return it would only be for drinks.

Beautiful decor. Beautiful rooftop setting coupled with great cocktails with sumptuous food. A winner all around.

Food was good, drinks are pricey, $28.00 for a margarita. The service was great and friendly. The view is beautiful. Fun night with friends.

Location Location Location ! Great views of DTLA & a beautiful restored 1920's building. Food was good , staff fumbled a bit as they "changed sections" and we had to wait 20+ minuets to get your drink and food order in. Most troubling was the DJ playing "his party music" way too loud to even hear our waiter or my date. We were seated right under a speaker & asked to switch tables. Even then way too loud. Once we were finished we found a nice quit(er) spot to enjoy the view & found the DJ. I told him about the music and he said " I ask them to turn it up. It's too quite where I am". Sorry, but If I'm enjoying a romantic sunset / evening dinner with a great view of DTLA I don't want to hear hip-hop music at 11 on the volume. I'll go clubbing for that. I'll try it again for the view but bring my earplugs if they play the same stuff.
