The food was delicious, but I waited too long for it, the music was playing very loudly in the establishment and it was very noisy, and in order to go to the restroom and just wash your hands before eating, you need to go up the steps to another room.

I'm a bit skeptical because when I went, almost an hour before closing time, the cafe was completely empty and the staff was cleaning, which gave a strange atmosphere. The staff was however every friendly and nice. I ordered the matcha with almond milk and lavender (Liquid Gold) and the lavender taste was so strong that it was not possible to say, except for the colour, that there was matcha in it.. so the drink was a bit of a disappointment.

The coffee is good. The owner is unpleasant. I'm a local and I've been coming here over the years and have always been offered a free drip coffee when I bought beans. But when I bought beans today and asked about the free coffee, the owner got super salty with me and said, "We don't do that here," and then tried to gaslight me that I'd been going to the Highland Park location (I've never been there.)
So instead of just being chill and friendly, he got confrontational, made a big deal of giving me the coffee and made me feel unwelcome and unappreciated as a customer. Bad vibes all around.

Super chill place to enjoy a cup of great coffee. I've only ordered the Figueroa, iced., and it's incredible. Great balance in sweetness and caffeine. Will definitely go back to try their other drinks. Their teas seem super legit as well ??

Civil's coffee is hit or miss. Their specialty drinks are either unassuming or not particularly good.
I enjoy being able to spend some quiet time at a coffee shop, but Civil's interior is cold and uninviting. While the staff is very friendly, I'd not want to do more than stop in for a quick drink--but of course not too late in the day or on a Sunday, since they are closed.
In an area where there are many hipster/craft coffee shops, I'd recommend going elsewhere.

I ordered a honey cinnamon latte extra hot. While the coffee flavor was fine the temperature was barely lukewarm...why is it so difficult to get a hot latte these days?? Oh and it took 10 mins.
