Food was terrible and made us feel sick. Everything from the appetizer to the main was bad.

The atmosphere is wonderful but then it goes down hill. The service was subpar and when 20% tip is added automatically, that’s a problem. The food was the biggest disappointment and not because of the cost. It was good but nothing memorable and the portion sizes were so small I left hungry. That’s the problem with the high prices, not the price. The lobster roll was basic and the charcoal bun was stale so I didn’t eat the bun. The charcoal added nothing. The hamachi was swimming in too much soy making it salty. Brussels sprouts need to be crispy and these were not, just fried. The hanger steak was a very small portion for a main dish but the mushroom sauce was delicious. This is an expensive restaurant and if you wanna charge high end prices your food needs to match.

Our food was served so late after a 6:30pm reservation that we were ready to leave and go somewhere else, but it was a birthday celebration so we stayed. Big mistake. We won't be returning after a $1,100 bill.

Great ambiance. We ordered a number of items, fried chicken and oysters came out within about 10 min of ordering.

Then we waited a good 70 min for our main items and were presented with cold, dry Japanese yams, cold pork chop, and and a very lukewarm miso salmon. Asked to heat the pork chop. Manager came out and asked if I could taste it acted pretty inconvenienced by the whole thing.

Dinner for 3 came out to be about $400 (20% tip automatically included). I left feeling like an idiot and embarrassed for taking my sweet aunt here. The food that was served at intended temperature was good but not at the price point.

The Nakatomi cocktail was pretty good.

We ended up in this place completely by accident as we originally intended to go somewhere else but it was closed.
We were impressed by the entry, the design initially felt good yet somehow commercial and initially was quite noisy place (not intimate). Service was bad, the food was nice but the bum to the burger was so hard we could not eat (not that I like bread anyway so whatever).
The mocktails were overpriced ($15?).

2 people, no real cocktails , 4 starters and almost $200. I don’t know this restaurant pr what to expect at first since it was accidental but I would expect way more for $200. Or at least better service so I feel somehow good about it.

Great experience. Food was fantastic. Jessie our server was very attentive. And the manager was wonderful. She helped us take a group photo.

Hinoki & the Bird nails that elusive mix of elevated but unpretentious. The space alone is worth the visit—lush, moody, and somehow both industrial and transportive, like if a greenhouse grew up and went to Tokyo. The cocktail program is top-tier: beautifully balanced drinks with subtle, unexpected notes that don’t smack you over the head. I had one with shiso and yuzu that could go toe-to-toe with any of the fancy bars downtown, but without the attitude.

As for the food—this place has real hits. The Hinoki-scented black cod is still a star, but don’t sleep on the duck. Rich, tender, and served with just enough restraint to let the flavors shine, it’s the kind of dish that makes you pause mid-bite to appreciate what’s happening. Even the vegetable dishes feel like a chef’s favorite child, not an afterthought.

Service was polished but relaxed, and the indoor/outdoor vibe makes it perfect for a date night or a low-key power dinner. Pricey, yes, but you get what you pay for: an LA essential that still feels like a bit of a secret.

Come for the cocktails, stay for the duck, and then find an excuse to come back.

We held our small wedding ceremony and lunch on the patio for and highly recommend Hinoki & The Bird. From planning to execution, the staff there were extremely helpful and hospitable. The food is absolutely delicious from the crispy jidori chicken with sambal honey, heirloom tomato & burrata salad with yuzu-shisho vinagrette, miso salmon and braised short rib and more, the chefs and kitchen staff did an amazing job. The event planner Monique was very responsive to all our questions and requests, and Sommelier Cristina very knowledgeable and helped us select wines from their very extensive wine list. Our wedding vision came to life at Hinoki & The Bird and our guests all commented on the beautiful and unique venue, to attentive staff to delicious food and drink. We could not be happier with our experience.

Honestly one of the best places I’ve been to in LA in a very long time. Our server Jesse and everyone from the hostess to the manager were so pleasant and genuine, the food was delicious, and the ambiance was beautiful and very comforting. Hinoki and the bird has jumped to my #1 favorite spot in LA, looking forward to coming back!
