We went here for my mom birthday. The food was decent and customer service was ok. We wanted to go to noodle bar because they're better but they were closed that day. So we settled here and I don't mind coming back the 2nd time here if we visit Monterey again.

Considering the 4.3 rating I had very high hopes the food would be good. Unfortunately it was the complete opposite. We ordered the Sushi Special, a dragon role, a California role, and the beef teriyaki. The food did not look well made and it was bland. The sushi did not look fresh or taste good. I honestly can’t recommend this restaurant considering the quality of food they served and the rundown dirty state the building is in. This is one local restaurant I will never be returning to.

The food was plentiful and delicious, but the interior of the restaurant was not well-maintained and felt deserted. It seems that there are many customers who make reservations and come to pick it up, so it seems to be quite popular.

The takeout sushi I just got was excellent. I just came back from Japan where I learned Japanese food is all about attention to detail even if the dishes seem simple and this sushi was better than a lot of sushi I had in japan. The fish, ginger, and other ingredients were so fresh and well prepared. Definitely worth the 21 dollars for 8 rolls of generous size. My only complaint is the can of coke was 2.50 which seems steep. But this is a high quality place overall. Ate my sushi in the nearby park and had a good time.

Lunch was mediocre. The ramen was tasty, but not exceptional. The sushi was just ok.

The special dinner bento box has increased price, but the food portion has decreased. They used to serve miso soup with it but they have removed it. This is a bummer since I liked it. Now you have to order it separately. The place is a somewhat cozy but requires lots of cleaning. I hope they can bring the miso soup back into the special dinner bento box.

I went with my family and was able to try their fried noodles, tempura shrimp roll, scallop sushi and cold soba. Everything was absolutely delicious and EXTREMELY fairly priced. The fried noodles had lots of shrimp (coctail size and small sized) as well as scallops, the shrimp tempura was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The scallops on the sushi were extremely tender and flavorful with a generous topping of roe. The buckwheat noodles were also fantastic. Only complaint about the food is that it takes a little bit to get to your plate, so dont go if youre in a rush. I highly recommend coming here

New Tokyo is an old restaurant located in the community of Marina. It is a small hole in the wall restaurant that is owned by a Chinese husband and wife team. The restaurant is in dire need of a major cleaning. The tables were sticky and the overall restaurant is not clean. The female owner is friendly but her husband is not. He is also not very attentive. The food is inspired with Chinese flavours and is nothing like authentic Japanese cuisine. I’m part Japanese as well as Pacific Islander I come from a family who were trained in Japanese cooking. I also have relatives that owned authentic Japanese restaurants. New Tokyo maybe good to those unfamiliar with authentic Japanese dishes. But to Japanese people this restaurant should be avoided. Parking lot makes parking easy.

Oh my goodness New Tokyo is a huge letdown to Japanese cuisine. The restaurant is somewhat dirty and run down and the atmosphere and ambiance is not very inviting or welcoming. This restaurant needs a thorough cleanup and renovation. I must also make note that this restaurant is not owned or operated by Japanese. The owners are Chinese or Vietnamese. The business is a family affair and run by a husband and wife. The woman also prepares the Sushi in plain view of customers. The male owner who also serves as the waiter works in the kitchen as well. The Teriyaki was very overcooked and the Teriyaki sauce didn’t help. The Sushi was really bad and the rice was not Sushi rice. The Sashimi (raw fish ) was really bad and the fish was obviously not fresh. It was sent back because it was not edible. The Tempura was made with a different type of batter and it was not like any Japanese style I have ever experienced. Family members who were visiting from Japan laughed at the crude attempt of the so called Japanese food that was served.Definitely not a restaurant that I would recommend.

Nice quiet restaurant with delicious food and friendly service. I had the chicken teriyaki and california roll, both of which were excellent. The teriyaki was the best I've ever had.

New Tokyo Restaurant is not Japanese. It’s a Chinese owned business that serves what is supposedly Japanese cuisine. The restaurant server was also the same person who was preparing the food. The Teriyaki was overly cooked and it had too much bottled sauce on it for my liking. The Tempura was alright but not anything extra ordinary. The Sushi however was not good. The rice had a very odd taste and it just wasn’t good. The restaurant could also use a good cleaning. I also noticed that this restaurant doesn’t seem to have Japanese customers. The majority of the customers were Hispanic and Caucasian people. Being part Asian and Pacific Islander the food here just wasn’t to my standards. Very unlikely that I would return. Non Asians are more likely to enjoy this restaurant since they don’t have any idea of what good Japanese cuisine should be like.
