Surprisingly authentic and good quality nigiri. The fish is fresh and the chef's skill is significantly above average. Very reasonably priced for what you get. Don't write this place off based on the location, if you want to have real nigiri sushi, come here!

This is THE spot if you're looking for quality Japanese fish. During my omakase experience, every course was prepared with care. You can really tell the chefs prioritize freshness and technical precision.
Sitting at the counter made it even better, where I watched each nigiri being made.
What I was served:
• Tai (Sea Bream)
• Kinmedai (Golden Eye Snapper)
• Saba (Mackerel)
• Anago (Sea Eel)
• Seared Otoro (Fatty Tuna)
For additional entrees, we tried the Chilean sea bass tempura apple salad and the steamed ginger Chilean sea bass. Both were incredibly light, delicate, and fluffy!
Highly recommend the Toro tartare! The texture paired with the crunchy seaweed is absolutely incredible.
The wagyu tobanyaki was also impressive. It comes sizzling, and that aroma hits you immediately when they lift the lid. Every bite was rich and flavorful, and even the vegetables were perfect.
To finish, we tried the premium soy sauce ice cream and croissant pudding. All desserts are made in-house, and we’ll definitely be back to try more flavors.
There's plenty of nearby parking, and we booked our reservation easily through Yelp.

Our server Gary was outstanding and was very polite and recommend some great dishes! It was a special night my wife and I had just gotten married the night prior and were having our first date night as a married couple. Big thank you to the wait staff and the chefs in the back preparing our wonderful food

Valentine’s Modern Kaiseki Experience
Food: 7/10
We chose the Valentine’s Kaiseki instead of omakase, and honestly the first three courses were my favorite parts of the entire meal.
The toro tartare nori tacos were creative and delicious — I could easily eat a whole tray of just those. Same goes for toro nigiri. If they ever offered a toro-only tasting, I’m in. The scallops were cooked perfectly, tender and balanced. The firefly squid was also surprisingly great — not chewy at all, which is usually my concern. I generally don’t love oysters, but this Kumamoto oyster was actually very well prepared and enjoyable.
Premium ingredients showed up throughout the meal — uni, toro (multiple times), wagyu — so the price point makes sense from an ingredient perspective.
Where it dipped slightly for me:
• The clear broth palate cleanser was my least favorite dish.
• The wagyu with soba risotto had potential, but the risotto was served as a dense puck and the wagyu leaned slightly overcooked.
• The simmered abalone was better than others I’ve tried, but it still carried that lingering ocean-forward taste that just might not be for me personally.
The hojicha lava cake was devious in flavor — rich, deep tea notes — but there was no lava inside. Still tasty, just not what the name promised.
Pacing:
The wait time between dishes felt a little slow. The full experience took exactly 2 hours. Not necessarily bad for a Valentine’s dinner, but noticeable.
Service: 10/10
Service absolutely carried the experience. Our server had amazing energy, confidently explained each course, shared what the restaurant offers on different days, and gladly gave her input as dishes came out. Water was consistently refilled and plates were cleared quickly. The sushi chef even stopped by with a small rose bouquet, which was a really thoughtful Valentine’s touch.
Ambiance:
Smart casual with full lovey-dovey Valentine’s vibes. Intimate and date-night ready.
Good to know:
Steep Price, Small Portions, and There’s a mandatory 18% service charge, which came out to almost $80 on our bill — just something to factor in.
Total bill came out to a bit over 500$. For that price I should be leaving stuffed.

Everything is great, but the price is a bit much compared to the quality. The food is great, i just can't justify paying these prices for the same experience again. I do feel bad for the servers - despite the gratuity automatically being charged on the bill, then there's a line for you to tip additional; but (& this is all according to what was written at the bottom of the menu) all the tips are pooled. Service was great but we did kinda want to tip *our* server, specifically - you know, the one who earned it. All in all it ended up being $150 for 2 people, - and that's with no drinks.
Edit: just to add that the AI reply to my review that was posted in response by the owner gave me the ick

Wonderful signature omakase experience for DineLA week. The offerings were beautifully presented, fresh and most importantly, delicious! Favorite items were the monkfish liver, scallop and toro sashimi, uni and otoro nigiri, as well as the incredible croissant pudding! I highly recommend this charming spot with impeccable service.

Exceptional from Start to Finish A True Standout in Monrovia
Our dinner at Fillet Sushi was nothing short of outstanding. We went on a Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., and despite the restaurant being completely full, the service was flawless attentive, warm, and never rushed. Every single staff member, from the waiters to the chefs to the pastry chef, was incredible. It’s rare to experience a place where the entire team is this dialed in.
We started with the cucumber salad ($8), which was the perfect opening bite sweet, savory, refreshing, and beautifully balanced. Simple but executed perfectly.
Next was the skewer platter ($35), which was phenomenal: wagyu, shrimp, jidori chicken, scallop, and meatball each one cooked with precision and packed with flavor. Not a single miss on the plate.
The crispy rice with spicy bluefin tuna ($15) was crisp, flavorful, and satisfying, and the bluefin pecorino truffle sashimi ($33) was an absolute standout rich, luxurious, and unforgettable. One of those dishes you keep talking about long after the meal.
The rolls were just as impressive. The yellowtail jalapeño roll ($21) had a bright citrus undertone that made every bite pop, while the crunchy lobster roll ($23) was smoky, indulgent, and downright divine.
Then came the Wagyu Tobanyaki Japanese A5 Wagyu ($45). Melt-in-your-mouth perfection. Rich, buttery, and expertly prepared truly special and worth every penny.
Dessert somehow managed to keep the momentum going. The Thai tea shaved ice with mochi and condensed milk ($13) was refreshing and fun, but the real star was the croissant pudding with soy ice cream ($13). Incredibly decadent, comforting, and superb the kind of dessert you think about the next day.
We paired everything with Sapporo and hot sake, which complemented the meal beautifully.
Beyond the food, the space itself is beautiful stylish, welcoming, and energetic without feeling overwhelming. Even on a packed night, the experience felt personal and seamless.
Fillet Sushi delivers on every level: freshness, flavor, service, and atmosphere. If you’re looking for exceptional sushi, thoughtful dishes, and a team that truly cares about the guest experience, this is the place. We can’t wait to come back.

Definitely slept on. More people need to go, or maybe not so we can always have a table ready for us 🤭 chef recommended a great sake that paired well with the sushi. We sat at the bar because we love the one on one experience and the chef always recommends the best. We got the 2 different omakase and he made sure our dishes came out at the same time. We will definitely be back again. Reservations are recommended because they will save the best for reservations.

A true hidden gem in Monrovia ✨
Fillet Sushi has only been open for one year, but it’s already making serious waves with its seasonal, experimental, chef-driven menu that’s constantly evolving. This is the kind of place where the chefs listen, create, and aren’t afraid to push boundaries—every visit feels different in the best way.
The cuisine leans Japanese with Thai fusion, bringing more diversity, bolder flavors, and unexpected pairings you won’t find at your usual sushi spot.
We started with Crispy Okra (addicting) and a Skewer Platter featuring Wagyu, Jidori chicken, and scallop, all grilled to perfection. Fresh half-shell oysters set the tone before diving into Fillet’s sashimi platter, which completely stole the show:
▫️ Toro pecorino truffle
▫️ Striped jack with yuzu jalapeño
▫️ Golden eye snapper with shiso ponzu
▫️ Scallop carpaccio
Other standouts included rich Monkfish liver, a vibrant ceviche with salmon, scallop, shrimp, and yellowtail, and a beautifully delicate steamed ginger Chilean sea bass. The crunchy lobster roll? A must-order.
For drinks, the Peach Highball was refreshing, but the Summer Melon was the standout—don’t skip this one 🍈✨
Dessert somehow topped it all:
Nutella croissant pudding with matcha ice cream and a surprisingly addictive soy sauce ice cream paired with a Japanese rice waffle.
If you’re a foodie who loves chef-driven menus, seasonal creativity, and flavors that keep you guessing, Fillet Sushi deserves a spot on your must-try list. Save this for your next SGV food adventure👀🍣
