The chicken katsu curry was unbelievably good. So much food for so cheap! The older lady who helped me with my order was so sweet. I’ve lived in the area for a couple of years now, and I’m kicking myself for not trying this place sooner!

Diner Japonica on Woodside Rd is a takeout only, super budget friendly Japanese restaurant in Redwood City. I wasn’t expecting much but the portion was actually huge… like really huge. Each dish can easily feed 2 people no joke. I got the bento combo with 3 items (teriyaki beef, teriyaki salmon, pork katsu) and a beef curry, both were $17.95 each.

Everything tasted really good. The beef was super tender and well seasoned. I think I like beef teriyaki more since its thin sliced and easier to eat. Pork katsu is prob my most favorite, crispy outside but still juicy inside. They also keep some fat on the pork which I actually like lol, more flavor. Salmon and beef curry was just okay, like any other Japanese restaurant.

They gave sooo much rice, I could only finish like 1/3 of mine before giving up (appreciate the generosity). There’s also 2 free salads on the side but honestly I was too full to even touch it.

Overall a really solid place, cheap and filling. Def recommend if you want affordable Japanese food around the Bay.

I'm SO glad someone mentioned 'mom & pop' - this place reminded me of the local places I grew up going to in Hawaii... (& hard to find here)

The Bento boxes are so oishi!!! The salmon teriyaki serving was huge and cooked perfectly (both pieces)... We also got chicken katsu & chicken teriyaki - both were great. Veggies - cooked & a side salad... Great value for the portions.

Now someone mentioned the curry was 'watery' - that IS Japanese curry. I didn't order it this time, but that's on my list to try on our next visit.

This is the perfect comfort food place - simple, tasty, good value - all prepared and served by a very nice couple.

Small local business- really loved the concept of simple, homemade to-go bentos, so we were super excited to come here a few weeks ago. A very friendly, older Japanese woman took our orders and offered us free drinks as well. The food came very quickly, so overall a really great in-store impression. Unfortunately, the food itself was just okay, and seemed overly catered to American tastes. The curry was a bit watery and was slightly sour, while the edamame was oily and too garlicky. The unagi sauce was overly sweet and didn't have that deep umami flavor.

Overall, an interesting concept and if you're not too picky about food or on a budget (the portions are HUGE), it's a worth a try.

For others looking for more traditional flavors, look elsewhere.

I had the 3 choices bento box. It comes with salad, rice, 1 piece of pork katsu, 1 teriyaki beef steak (with broccoli & carrot) and 2 large shrimp tempura (with potato salad). $20 total. Good value and fresh food. Feeds 2 people. It was not very busy on a Sunday afternoon. I waited for 10 min for the food. It's for takeout only.

Take out only. I got the chicken curry, spicy. The spiciness wasn't too much, kind of mild in my opinion. Flavor was okay, honestly didn't taste like much. The chicken was delicious. But where they shine is their value. The amount of curry can easily last 2-3 meals. Can't beat value in this economy

My take out dinner was humongous from Diner Japonica. It could’ve fed 2 patrons easily. It was a combination dinner with tempura, salmon lots of rice and a side of greens w an umami dressing. The place is not a sit down diner with the booths cordoned off. The old looking restaurant is in a small strip mall right on Woodside with a small parking lot. If you like big portions of oishi foods, get on over there. If you’re looking for ambience, it’s not this place but when I’m hungry for oishi foods, I’m definitely going back. The obasan who works there is very sweet. I recommend this little take out place.
