Rice Theory is a small, cute, and cozy shop in the Land Park area, known for its delicious and fresh Japanese snacks and meals. It landed on Sacramento's Top 50 restaurants list for its flavorful selection of musubi, onigiri, inari, and gimbap. The shop is clean and inviting with a small indoor seating area, though many customers opt to take their food to go. The packaging is adorable and thoughtful, and plastic gloves are provided for a mess-free experience.
The menu offers a variety of items like the unagi egg musubi, sukiyaki beef roll, spicy tuna onigiri, and California roll, which is a standout due to its special sauce. They also have creative inari such as the Mayo Wasabi Salmon inari, which is creamy with a nice kick. Items with salmon, ebi, or crab, or those wrapped in purple rice, are always good. The musubi and onigiri are kept warm in a heated case, while the inari is refrigerated. Service is fast, great, friendly, and helpful, with staff being nice and patient.
Parking in the lot can be tricky, so street parking nearby on Irvan Way is recommended. It is a perfect spot for a light breakfast, lunch, or a good snack after a walk around Land Park. The experience can feel overwhelming because everything looks good, leading customers to order a lot. While most items are tasty and flavorful, some, like the spicy beef gimbap, may not be spicy and can fall apart. Portion sizes for some items, like the onigiri, may be wished larger. Overall, it is a "to go" place that is definitely worth visiting and returning to for more.
