The drive to the property is quite nice. However, having had Heitz cabs over the years, we were totally disappointed in the quality of the wine as well as the discussion presented about each pour. One of the cabs ( I forgot which) was actually SOUR to the taste. Our host explained this was the acidity of the grapes.....well, I've never had a good wine that was made to leave a SOUR taste in your mouth. The C-91 was the best of the lot, but even that had no body or substance (it was very bland compared to what you'd expect a cab or red blend to be). We were not aware that a few years ago the long time owner of the winery died and a family in Arkansas, specializing in large agricultural holdings, evidently bought the winery. I'm sure the family was well intentioned when they purchased the winery, and saw it as a good investment. However, can you really control the quality of your product when you're over 2000 miles away? Overall a very poor experience. I certainly will not be purchasing their wine in the future, which is disappointing given my past experience.

After seeing their post on IG about the C-91 and falling in love with the story behind it, the wife and I decided to do some stay-cationing since we are locals to Napa and visit several wineries. I told her I absolutely wanted to visit Heitz so we added it to our agenda for the day. When we pulled up the long drive we were instructed where to park by a gal. We parked and exited our vehicle and walked towards her. She quickly asked the name on our reservation and we provided it. The second thing out of her mouth was "Are the two of you fully vaccinated?". Both my wife and I were taken aback and just walked in silence staring at each other for a moment before answering "no". We where then lead at the farther seating area from any other patron that was there that day.... we passed what must have been 6-8 areas. There were about 4-5 other tastings going on and they were all seated within close proximity of each other. It really felt like we where ostracized because of our non vaccination. I sat down and my wife asked where the restroom was and was then directed towards some trailers. I waited a few moments for her to return and could tell she was visibly shaken and I asked her if she just wanted to leave, and she did, so we did. As we were walking out we explained to the girl why were leaving, she expressed it was because she was wondering if she could take off her mask. We went into St. Helena to eat and then called Heitz about refunding the $200 tasting fee and explain why we left. The girl on the other end was very understanding. They refunded the tasting fee. All in all I am very upset. The trip to Heitz was highly anticipated by me and I was thoroughly looking forward to it. This has left a bit of tarnish on them for me. My wife is a small business owner in Napa. She was shut down for over a year. I am lucky enough to work for a winery that is 100% direct to consumer and was able to work from home ever since the pandemic started. Once my wife was able to open up we vowed to start visiting more wineries (one Monday a month) and really give back to the small businesses within Napa as much as we can (while also of course having fun!). With over 400 Wineries and tasting rooms here we doubt we will be able to visit them all, but will give it our best shot! Unfortunately Heitz will not make the list.
