My husband and I visited this restaurant on Sunday, April 7th, 2024, at around 1:30 pm. However, we were disappointed with the poor service provided by the hostess/manager, who seemed to ignore us, potentially due to our attire (which appeared to be used to judge our presumed socioeconomic background) or my Asian ethnicity. Although she asked us to wait for a minute, she took other customers' names right after us and assisted them, leaving us unwelcome. As we were not served, we had to leave the restaurant. Despite the lack of service, my husband still gave a sympathy tip of $3.00. We ended up at an IHOP nearby, where we received excellent and attentive service, and my husband left a generous tip. It seems that Black Bear Diner in Salinas tolerates disrespect towards people of color and their clothing choices. We have decided to discontinue our business with all Black Bear Diner establishments.

We have been coming Here for years. Yet this morning "Makayla" gave our table away because 2 people out of our party were parking. My mother is diabetic and she needs to eat at certain times because of her condition. When I asked to speak to the manager to see what was going on and why other families were going before us. Makayla denied what she had mentioned to my parents. She switched it to her saying that we will give you a few more minutes. If that was the case she never came back to check on us to see if we were all there. After waiting more time my parents were to upset to stay since my mom was already feeling sick from not eating. We would celebrate family birthdays, and had multiple Saturday or Sunday breakfast meals there. We won't be coming back.

This was a delivery, so i cannot speak to the service at the restaurant. I ordered Denver omelet, coffee and a bearclaw. Omelet was very generic, no seasoning, all elements of the omelet spilling out, proportions of the filling were not great. Definitely not the best Denver omelet I had and not the best I had when compared to other BBD. The hash that came with it was terrible. Soggy pale pieces of potato. I could not eat it. Bearclaw tasted awful (felt like chewing on raw dough). Could not have more than one bite. Coffee was lovely. All in all, most definitely not worth the money I had to pay for this meal.

Edited 3/9/24Black Bear had us back for 4 comped meals and I don't know if they had a different person cooking but the food was fantastic! We ordered the same meals we had previously and this time they were made perfectly. My mother in laws steak was cooked correctly this time and had the correct dressing on it. The baked potatoes were soft and delicious with plenty of butter and sour cream. And the veggies were tender like they should be. Thank you for fixing our complaint. We will definitely be back.Went for dinner last night with my husband, mother in law and daughter. Came out from Watsonville which was a waste. Us 3 adults ordered the 10 oz flank steak (?) special. The waitress asked how we wanted it cooked. My mother in law does NOT like her meat rare so she asked for WELL DONE. My hubby and I wanted medium rare. They also ordered a baked potato with the entree. The waitress came over to let us know she put our order to cook but that she had them "do all the steaks the same"... I was worried about mine being overcooked but I should have been more concerned about how raw my mother in laws was. So bloody she said it was still mooing and only ate 2 bites. The baked potato was so NOT baked it was hard and inedible. I asked if they did cheesy broccoli but instead of just saying no it wasn't an option, the put shredded cheese on the top and I'm guessing microwaved it. Either way, it was not a pleasant meal. Definitely won't be back and don't recommend for dinner.

Not every Black Bear Diner is equal, but this one had excellent food! The service was less than stellar, but that appeared to just the individual we got that day. Most of the time, the service is also really good. For the amount of food you get on the plate, the prices are quite good. If you've never tried Black Bear before, this should be a good experience.
