I don't think this little gem gets enough recognition. Partially I think half the people that come here are drunk and the other part is that it doesn't open until very late. Understandable, it targets a certain crowd of people partying out late with little options to eat something good. By eating something good, I mean real good! I have been coming to this stand since idk 2014-15? Idk about the people who have gotten sick? Perhaps something they drank before or after? These are good quality dogs 100%, I have a very sensitive stomach and a lot, and I mean a lot of food doesn't sit well or at all in my stomach, but not once have I've been sick from the dogs here. Even when there's a line, it moves really quick! So you'll be in and out in no time on your way to close out and check out for the night, or just getting a quick snack before continuing the party! JD is pretty nice considering he's a one man show, and doesn't pre-stage his dogs like some other stands do Hope this spot continues to be here for many years to come!

Went to San Diego to celebrate Pride with my friends, and every time was told to get hot dogs at Mateo's! I got myself the Grunge - hot dog plus cream cheese, bacon, and added fried onions. Did. Not. Disappoint!! It was a great snack for those late nights after dancing at Flick's. Thanks Mateo for the great dog

Went to Mateo's almost every week when I lived in San Diego. Now I just try to go every time I'm visiting. It's the perfect snack after a long night out and I appreciate him. I would go crazy dealing with drunk people after Richs, but kudos to Mateo for having patience and making some damn good hot dogs too!

His hot dogs are always amazing. Lately I've been getting the veggie hotdog. Tasty vegetarian hot dogs are pretty hard to find, but here they are so delicious. I love that he is always there when needed ! MeanIng, everyone leaving Rich's, drunk, gets to enjoy a hot dog. I bet he puts up with a lot, so I'm thankful for that.

It has happened to me and my two other friends when the owner charges our cards til they declined. I'm pretty sure hot dogs are not $30 each and the guy doesn't even provide a receipt. The hot dogs were ok, just don't get ripped off

I seriously cannot believe Mateo only has 13 reviews so far!?!? Y'all need to stop being so drunk and stop fighting in the line so y'all can actually post how bomb your food is. I lived in LA for 4 years and would make trips out to SD JUST FOR THESE HOT DOGS. Forget the average LA Dog he has something for everyone! And this man works hard so don't forget to leave a TIP :)

Yeah, the little dude running the hot dog place is actually nice, you can see the guy has good intentions, but the recipes for the hot dogs aren't great and the buns aren't properly heated, but thanks for the good service, this place has potential just have to redesign they're hot dog strategy
