Five stars across the board. We came here for our anniversary and genuinely had one of the best Italian dining experiences we’ve had in San Diego.

Romanella is a relatively new Italian restaurant that opened about a year ago. There aren’t many Italian restaurants in Clairemont other than The Godfather, which is a fine dining restaurant. However, Romanella’s interior and set up gives it an upscale/fine dining feel.

Romanella Cucina Romana offers an authentic Italian dining experience in San Diego. The restaurant feels upscale and fine dining yet warm and intimate. Guests enjoy a large selection of vegetarian dishes, house bread served warm with a matching dip, and appetizers such as arancini, bruschetta, and Fiori di Zucca with fig jam, ricotta cheese stuffed tender zucchini. Entrées include Primavera pizza, penne pesto, rigatoni vodka with mushrooms and sausage, pepperoni pizza with a light crisp crust, 36 oz Porterhouse Fiorentina steak with mixed green salad, mashed potato or rosemary roasted potatoes, pappardelle bolognese, contadina pizza, kids spaghetti and meatballs with a scoop of gelato, cioppino, and a pasta dish with clams that are meaty. The cheese wheel special and homemade tiramisu are also praised. Wine options feature house red wine with a smooth flavor and off‑menu vintage reds that are generous in price. Happy hour runs every day from 4:00pm‑5:30pm and Wednesday offers 50% off all wines. Happy hour include a couples meal with a basket of bread and dipping sauce. Service is friendly, knowledgeable and excellent; staff provide great hospitality and even complimentary limoncello for special occasions. The ambience includes warm music, updated decor, and a dog friendly patio that feels like eating in the colosseum. Food is amazing from the fresh baked bread and Alfredo cheese sauce dip to the oven baked pizza with ricotta cheese that melts in the mouth. The pizza crust feels light crisp and structure. The overall experience is joyful, memorable and highly recommended.
