Nice expression of the chef cuisine in the plate. We had the four course menu, every peace was perfect and the pairing original. For my expectation, I would have prefer some local wine, but super interesting suggestions. Service was not there at all, selfish waitress attitude. Service let us a regular impression at the end!
Tasting menus at restaurants like Aster should illustrate the full range of skills of the chef and this menu certainly did that. Not every dish worked 100% for me but all demonstrated skill and invention. Brilliantly delivered beef, an exceptional rana Roja bean dish with a confit egg yolk and a beautiful frozen peach desert were highlights. There are touches of Asian cooking that come through in several dishes which really worked well. But the quality of the cooking needs to be matched by the front of house team and Aster is blessed with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable team who brought the menu to life. Definitely a small plate tasting menu, would have liked to have seen what a second desert might reveal. Oh and absolutely great coffee too
Last April we had dinner in the Aster we enjoyed it very much. The dishes were tasty and inventive, it recently obtain a Michelin Star and the deserve it. It is worth the trip to the Mission area.
This is an out-of-the-way surprise and gem! Artfully presented dishes with surprising flavors and foraged accoutrement. A lot of care and art goes into each dish with delightful results. Exquisite tastes over quantity but the meal is complete in its four courses. Definitely worth a special celebration and a place to return to. The prix fixe is not outrageous and the wines are on the higher price end, (but delicious as well).
i am always a bit careful when attending a high end restaurant in the USA. Being French, I always feel like everything is way overpriced for what you get. While still not cheap, I think this restaurant did a great job overall. 4-course menu at 75$, wine pairing for an extra 50$. We ordered different dishes so that we could have a good overall opnion of this place. I thought 7 out of 8 dishes were excellent, with a special mention for the 63 degree egg dish and both desserts (chocolate, and strawberry). I was really disapointed with the beef starter dish, tartare style. Way underseasoned, and meat was chewy. I love beef tartare, but this one fell short. The rest was awesome, every dish has a little twist or some unusual ingredient that made them very interesting to try. Wine pairing was very good, but I thought each glass could have been a little bit more generous, especially for the price, it felt like 12USD per glass was too much. Overall I thought this was a very good dinner, and they fully deserve the 1*.
