The bar is set pretty high for Mexican food in SF and El Matate is among the best. Most recently tried a few tacos (chile verde with pork, al pastor, and the pollo con chile rojo) all of which were very flavorful. Plenty of filling in the tacos. They provided free chips and salsa while we waited and both salsas were good! The pickled veggies on the side were also very nice. Friendly, fast service. Limited seating available outside. Great food for a great price.
El Metate is definitely good. Whereas most taquerias are best for takeout in my opinion, this one is made for sitting down and eating there. They have a cute little spot and it's welcoming to take a seat and enjoy the moment. Their burritos are a bit different than your standard Mission fare! Most other places offer a fat, baby-sized burrito but theirs is more compact and efficient. It's longer and thinner. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants because a "veggie" item is not simply a lack of meat, but the addition of vegetables. Great customer service and delicious food.
