On the scale of chicken & rice dishes, Gai is on the upper end for fast casual options. Rooster & Rice is my main basis of comparison which I got in both San Francisco and Irvine. Gai’s lean chicken & rice dish is savoury but not overly salty, which I appreciate. I noticed this especially with the soup, which was a clear, delightful broth with spring onions. Rooster’s soup, in contrast, tastes like straight up chicken stock from a carton with an extra pound of salt added. I can’t even eat it because it’s too salty. Rooster’s chicken also caused me to have a reaction where I experienced indigestion and slight difficulty breathing after eating their chicken. I didn’t have any issues with the meal from Gai’s so their preparation must be better, as the food seems safer. This was a great takeout option and I’d order here again.

I was visiting SF for the weekend and literally ate here the 3 days I was in the city. I’m not from the US so I’m not used to eating a lot of fried food in the way most fast food restaurants serve it. I ordered the Lean Gai the 3 times I visited the restaurant and it was a huge relief being able to eat something so healthy, delicious and for a reasonable price during my visit. I liked the dish so much I’ve tried recreating it because there are no similar restaurants in my city.

Came here before the Spiderverse concert. It was super easy to order and the food came out fast!

Good:
- The chicken and rice default dish was great and there was so much flavor in the simple ingredients - it's also a good portion size
- Seating was tight but it was decently easy to grab a table and get set up.

Bad:
- The place is pretty dingy and casual, with no service and it's a seat-yourself type of situation

Overall this place is a fun place to get a quick healthy bite! I enjoyed that it was overall good value and relatively inexpensive for a hearty portion.

Small place, I had Hainan chicken, it was just average. They use takeout containers only which is really bad for the environment. I won’t be back.

Rustic beautiful store front. The chicken sandwich is generous in size, goes past the bun. Tender, fresh, and the waffle cut fries are delicious. They also have a really refreshing drink option including Thai teas.

The chicken is very delicious, the rice is delicious and fragrant, and the sauce is delicious. Makes me miss Thailand. But the atmosphere outside the shop is scary. There are homeless people everywhere. Someone from the house came to dig up trash in the shop.

The food was great! It was exactly what I expect for Hainanese Chicken. It was cooked perfectly and the rice was so good with it.

Splitted the steamed chicken and their fried chicken with my colleague. It was so good! Both so fast and flavorful. Chicken is moist & good. Love their ginger scallion sauce!!

I ordered the white meat chicken. But contrary to the website they used processed chicken. The chicken breast has no skin, no bones and it even has bubbles in the meat!

I’ve eaten a lot of chicken breast and this is totally processed. They remade the order for me and it was the same.

Rooster and rice is way better. Real chicken there vs processed chicken here
