The atmosphere, the quality of the establishment, the friendly regulars, even the drink prices make the Gold Cane Lounge a neighborhood favorite. I consider it an honor to be a regular here.

Have to say that this is not a bar that I go to regularly in the Haight. Went with a friend who wanted to sit outside. Color me surprised as I’ve been here several times over the years but didn’t realize that they had an outdoor area. (It is usually a stop if we’re doing a pub crawl on Haight but never a destination.) It’s two levels with the bathroom at the top of the stairs and this little patio at the top. Got “reprimanded” by a regular for having our seats too close to the lights in the bushes. I guess she pays for the lights herself and they got caught the chairs. It was an odd experience and certainly one that made me feel very unwelcome. I suppose that was the intention but that’s fine as there are PLENTY of bars in the area.

Old timer story. Used to hang out here back in the late 80s. I remember on St Patty's day two bartenders were working; Pat and Paul (I think it was Paul). I think Alex the owner was too. Paul was gay and pretty uptight most of the time. The place was packed and Paul was fed up with the drunken crowd so about 6pm he stood up on the bar in the middle of the room, motioned with his arms like he was dividing the room in half and started screaming in his Irish accent "Everybody from here to the street, you're all 86'd". He went on awhile trying to kick people out but nobody left. We had a big group of regulars who were from Ireland, mostly. Good guys but really drank alot. I guess we all did back then. Not like that now.

This is a great place to drink with awesome prices. The manager Mark is a sweetheart. He made me a special drink, because I can't have carbonation... but I wanted a fruity tasing drink and, it's now my favorite drink . My new go to bar when I visit San Francisco. . They have happy hour prices all the time. I highly recommend.
