If you want to eat well, go early

The dim sum here is great. We got take out, but whether you are eating in or taking out you will be in for a wonderful experience.Vegetarian options: There are a variety of tasty vegetarian items on the menu. The desserts are especially delicious.Parking: There is paid street parking, but it can be kind of hard to find a spot nearby.

Good: The place is old and well worn out, but looks nice. Food came out fast and no problems with service. The restroom is very old and beat up, but usable.Bad: Most of the food was either bland or just bad. My wife said the yams they served us were too old and shouldn't have been served to customers.

Most chaotic check in and wait system. You might wait 10 mins maybe 2 hours. You will only know once you are sitting down.

A line at 10am opening indicates how popular HKL is, and the food and service are quite good. I think it's a bit expensive, but I'm still used to dim sum prices from the 20th century. Granted, we did order a ton of food for 18 people, and there were lots of leftovers.

Food was okay but overpriced, but service was amiss.i typically dont tip if service was below average and this was, being seated and brought our food. To be added, we found some hair in our chicken feet (human hair), and made no fuss about it. I put a zero in the tip line, and stood up to leave. As soon as i did, a worker came over to take our check (she did not service us, sit us, or waiter for us at any point, seemed to a be a manager???) before we start to walk. She saw the zero tip, and questioned me very loduly and rudely in a crowded restaurant. I told her "no i wont be tipping" and kept walking. she walked away from us mad, and told another worker before we stepped out the restaurant.....yeah, expect to be confronted if you dont tip.

Solid dimsum that doesn't disappoint. I came around 11 on a Sunday and didn't have to wait! The food also comes out fast. The winners for me are usually the chicken feet and also the bbq pork pineapple buns because wow no one else does the crust like they do. It's such a good combo. I also enjoy their pork/chicken/bamboo in tofu skin/bean curd, shrimp rice crepe rolls, and shrimp dumplings. But this most recent visit, I also loved the rice rolls in XO sauce and taro cake fried in XO sauce. The pumpkin in salty egg yolk had a bland batter (where's the salt in that yolk??), the egg tart was flaky but too sweet, and their lava egg yolk bun had barely any filling, which usually isn't the case. Even with all that, this place is a staple for me when I need to bring someone to yumcha!

3 stars is for the sneaky 18% that made it to the bill surreptitiously for 4 adults and one kid. We don't mind tipping more , but the practice we found was underhanded and not on the menu.
