Ordered takeout with my friends. This is one of our favorite Chinese spots in the city. The food is generally pretty spicy but very authentic.

Only Chinese people know how authentic this is.PaO Jiao Chicken Gizzard, instantly brings you back to Hunan. Super spicy and juicy! Gem place in town!

Beautiful evolution of Henry's Hunan while paying its proper respects! We got the spicy cod, veggie fried rice, chow mein, and kung pao tofu (which is typically not on the menu but they were kind enough to accommodate my dietary needs!). The dining area upstairs is modern, stylish, calming and tucked in. The staff is always so kind and caring. Always a pleasant dining experience here at Sohunan!

Came here for a team lunch in the middle of a workday. We came to get a table before noon and had no wait/were seated right away. There is a separate line for you to order take out and it seems pretty efficient from what I saw. When we left at around 12:30, the line to get a table and to order take out at the window was much longer. We over ordered so much because it was pretty reasonably priced and it was one of the tables where you can turn the middle to easily share all the dishes. Make sure to order white rice on the side if that's something you want with your dishes as the majority of what we ordered did not. Portion sizes are HUGE- share everything. They allow for you to choose how spicy you want it- I'd recommend starting on the lower side & asking for them to bring extra sauce to the table Hot & sour soup - 5/5 one of the best I've had in the city so far. Absolutely delicious. So much flavor and perfect to order for take out if sick. Beware that it is spicy and not easy on those that are not good with spice. Meat Pie- 5/5. Reminded me of a Crunchwrap supreme. I was wary of this one, but it was absolutely delicious and had a lot of flavor. Fried rice - 3/5. Was alright, didn't have very much flavor. Orange chicken- 4/5 sticky, orange chicken. just the way people usually like it. Decently spicy. Chow mein - 3/5. It was alright, maybe I just am not the biggest fan of this dish in general. Mongolian beef- 5/5 was a hit & delicious. Was on the spicier side even though we ordered it medium. Only reason I downrated it was for the service. It was quite slow and we had to repeat ourselves quite a bit. It was a large party so I do appreciate their patience. As we were leaving, ladies insisted on us bagging our leftovers and quickly ran out to give us bags even though they were clearly busy. Much appreciated that!

We were suggested this place by our friend who lived in San Francisco before. It was really tasty food. Loved their fish fillet and shrimp fried rice. Though the food was little salty to my taste but still loved it. Taking out one star because they forgot to bring our beer or even refill water. Other than that everything was great.

Henry's Hunan has the best chicken fried rice in San Francisco. The other food is good too, but I come back for this dish only.

Very local and signature Hunan dishes. Every dishes are strong in spice and flavor and it was so good! The service is good and the serving is quick. Highly recommend if you are starving and want your food quickly prepared. They also offer variety of signature Chinese drinks which are really good with spicy food.Alert: very spicy

I've been eating here since 2001!...Yes! While working for the pacific stock exchange. There was a trader named "Marty" and the special was invented. Was black bean chicken with sausage!..That's over 23 years ago!...and still amazing!!!!

Disappointing. We arrived early--we were anticipating it to be crowded with a lunch time rush, as it was pre-pandemic. Surprisingly, there were plenty of available tables; we were seated after a brief wait--towards the back of the restaurant. Once seated, we waited & waited before some gentleman came with our menus. We waited even longer for anyone to return to take our order. The table next to us seated at the same time, got up and left as they received no service after waiting as long as our table did. Another party was subsequently seated at the vacated table and they also left for lack of service. In both instances, the guests were persons of color--one has to wonder. We ordered the onion pancake and while the pancake was flaky, nicely layered (reminded me of pratha) and not greasy, there was barely any green onions in it at all. My tan tan noodles weren't spicy, I was expecting a little heat and both the Mongolian beef & kung pao chicken were nothing special. Our orders came with hot sour soup, which was more tepid than hot, barely sour and not even close to spicy. The food was overall unremarkable and doesn't live up to my memory of how good it was. Not sure if I would return.

The absolute best Chinese anywhere. My favorite, by far, is Diana's Meat Pie. I also recommend the Harvest Pork; Mongolian Beef; and, Kung Pao Chicken. I first ate at a Henry's in 1993 on Battery St in SF. Next I frequented Henry's on Bryant. Now it's Henry's on Natoma or Church St. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED...but, this is not Panda Express. This is substantial, regional Chinese food. Their chow mein is great, but that's not the reason to go for me.

Quick Summary:- I have low spice tolerance, and spicy dishes are very spicy- Lightly seasoned for most dishesWe visited here on a busy weekday lunch hour, but we were able to get a seat before it became high rush hour. For this round I was mostly anticipating what the dishes will be as one of the group members ordered. However, I did request to try the hot and sour soup, so that happily got into the ordering mix. We did order a couple, but the soups arrived first. The hot and sour soup was very spicy. It is the 'first sip is the dangerous' kind, where one mistake could send one coughing. I tried not to, but it is close. The soup also emitted a cozy warmth from the stomach, so while it was spicy it was nice. Some of the dishes I ordered I wasn't able to take photos, but my favorite was a dish with beef pan-fried with peppers. The seasoning was a dry rub kind, so there was no sauce. The beef was very flavorful because of the spices, that were sprinkled on top.

Not only the best Hunan Restaurant in San Francisco, I would dare to say it is the best in the world. Of course I haven't tried all of them, but I'm still confident. Henry Chung's family has been an institution in San Francisco and they have maintained the quality he established decades ago at of each of their restaurants, although a few have closed. My favorite restaurant in the world.
