Never had dinner. It was so crowded I felt unsafe. First they tried to seat us at a small table for 2 where one of us would have been in the aisle; then upstairs at a small table for 2 that was just as crowded. It was so noisy and overcrowded I really felt unsafe. When I saw a stack of steaks sitting on the counter in the kitchen that was it. I told my husband I had to leave. Didn’t check food or service but I would give atmosphere even less if I could. Wow! The crowd seems like it would have been against the law. Go down the street to Morton’s. We had a great steak and the atmosphere was calm and a lot less noisy.

A great restaurant with a lot of history. Eating at John’s Grill makes the occasion and experience very special. Delicious food with fresh ingredients and very good service. Not pretentious and hipster. A proper restaurant!

It was so loud we could barely hear each other sitting right next to each other. Ordered fries asked three times they never arrived. Ordered ribeye Pittsburg style(charred outside pink inside). Received a1/2inch steak grillled. Asked whether this was the wrong cut of beef though they assured us it was a ribeye. Also stated this was not Pittsburg style. They returned the steak the same way. As any experienced cook knows they make a steak Pittsburgh style by cooking in a smoking hot cast iron pan not a grill. They did comp my meal but it is surprising a steak house supposedly renowned for beef would try to pass a low cut of meat off as ribeye as well as try to cook it as Pittsburgh style in a grill. Very disappointing

To say this was the worst dinning experience I’ve ever had would be a vast understatement of how bad the service, food and hospitality was at this disgrace of a restaurant. I came in at 8:50 checked in for my reservation and had the jazz room selected. I was told the wait would be 15 minutes and proceeded to wait outside with my girlfriend in the rain. 20 minutes go by and still no call. I ask and the server say you’re up shortly. I also asked to make sure we’d still get the jazz room and I was assured that we were. Another 20 minutes go by, we were hungry cold and thirsty. I come in to get my girlfriend a drink and ask one more time and he AGAIN TELLS ME the table would be ready soon. After 1 HOUR TEN MINUTES. We get seated mind you we had the reservation and then don’t get the room we were promised. We were so hungry but decided not to fight it. We sit down and wait another Hour for our food and my girlfriend steak was raw. No accountability on the mangers part although our server was so kind. We decided then and there to leave when they told us they would void the charges but here I am with the bill sitting in my account. Horribly run establishment. Please do NOT SPEND SPECIAL DAYS HERE YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED AND MADE A FOOL

First time visiting John's grill on Valentines Day. I had no reservations i put my name on the guest list. They said they would call me when they could. So I went to the bar for some drinks and had a great time chatting with everyone there. Lets just say I got a table for 2 within 15 minutes thanks to the hostess and the manager. Great atmosphere and great service from everyone. This is now my favorite place in the Bay Area. Thank you for a great Valentines Day dinner and drinks.
My husband and I were visiting San Francisco for Valentine’s Day and decided to celebrate on the 13th. We made reservations to John’s Grill using Open Table which is always a breeze! This was our first visit to John’s Grill, chosen by doing research on Instagram. Our server was Dana - such a sweetheart! She was the most gracious hostess and made our evening out so delightful. The drinks were delicious and the food, top notch! We both chose seafood for our meals. John’s Grill is located in the Union Square area which is very walkable. The ambiance could be described as cozy, homey, romantic, traditional and historical. They played jazz / 40s style music over the speakers which was very enjoyable and cheery. There were candles lit on every table and the lights were low. This place would be great for date night, family dinner or a celebration. I can imagine many happy occasions have occurred here over the years! Kudos to John’s Grill and thank you.

And be sure to go upstairs and look at the Maltese Falcon display!
