I bought a mini day pass and took the opportunity to ride around town today with my mom. We came out to Dinner Richmond specifically to grab some pork buns. There was a line when we arrived and another when we left, so this place is popular. The person in front of me actually came from Sacramento to stock up. She got 6 dozen buns in total, including roast pork, pineapple custard and green onion. She said she preordered the day before since she was getting so many. So, I had high expectations. I ordered 10 pineapple and roast pork buns and asked for 1 to be set aside so Mom and I could sample it in the store. It was delicious. Unfortunately, they were out of the other buns or else I may have gotten some more. Next time....

A truly wheat flour, Chinese bakery (no BS) doing one thing well — baked buns with alluringly caramel-brown crusts. A 3-man team can be seen preparing the dough in the back during morning hours. Baked BBQ Pork Buns, excellent.

My grandfather came here almost everyday up until he was in his hospital bed. I used to visit him and his friends here after playing at Richmond Rec Center around the corner. I moved out of state a couple of years ago and I came for the first time as an ever since my grandfather passed away. I ordered my bbq pork buns - however I mispronounced soy milk in Cantonese. The person preparing my order (I used to see her all the time growing up) scolded me that I am just like her son who doesn’t know any Chinese.
All in all - the food here is comforting and the prices great, however, I have never felt more farther from my grandfather until my visit today

Kid-friendliness: It’s not. Very small space inside for seats. The food the kids will love but not the best indoor space.

Only a place like this can invoke memories and nostalgia like no other. Some would call this a whole in the wall bakery, I’d call it a portal to southern china. The pastries here are so delicious, my favorite is the pork bun, I’ve been getting it since I was a kid. Today I had the experience of getting one fresh out of the oven. It was so warm that I had to let it sit for 5 mins to cool down.
I can’t recommend this place enough, places like this are some of the fabric which holds neighborhoods together.
