APPS Oysters...good, nothing special regards to flavors. Tofu salad...Excellent. Beef shin...maybe you should sous vide it; it was pretty tough; least favorite. Golden coin...the liver mouse made it tasty. Firecracker shrimp...excellent. Dumpling...had better at many, if not most dim sum restaurants. MEDIUM PLATE Crab rice roll...good, nothing special. MAIN PLATES Fragrant cod fish. Good with a clean taste; crispy skin was wonderful. Pork jowl...my favorite; tender and flavorful. Just a tiny bit sweet after a few pieces, but nothing the rice didn't fix. Rice...a little hard and couldn't figure out what flavoring sauce was put on it...flavor didn't add much to good old fashioned steam rice.
The food was creative and tasty. We got three appetizers and an entree. We had a late reservation. The menu is very simple and caters to different palates. The scallops and the pea dumpling were delicious. Fish was delicious as well. The service was a bit choppy, not slow but a bit rushed and constantly interrupted. Took away from the fine dining experience. Food should be about enjoying and conversation.
Our initial impression was not good as the “clean” plate on our table had crusty food on it. The oysters were good and the the firecracker shrimp were great. The scallop dish was bland, the crab pancakes were tasteless and slimy and the stir fry / seafood noodle dish was ok although the abalone was rubbery. The wine by the glass was overpriced and the dessert we shared contained grapefruit which we didn't know and shouldn't eat. With tip, this $320 dinner was not worth it. Off night? I don't get the raves. We are adventurous diners and like a brew pub to a Michelin-starred restaurant. This meal was a huge disappointment!
Special tasting menu, and the dishes were exceptional. Wine pairing selections were thoughtful and exceptional. Music is perhaps a touch loud. Service is a team effort versus individual excellence (could use a little finesse, but that's the state of service in SF currently).
Food is great, innovative Chinese food that tastes great. Not cheap (about $100/pp) but worth it. Will come back again. What we ordered. Pork jowl Charsiu great. Quail great. Firecracker Shrimp good. Soft Tofu with avocado pidan good. XO little fry king good Beef shin & artichoke good Golden coin a bit greasy.
What a bummer of an experience. Had been looking forward to it, ordered the steak and more than half of it was inedible. Had to wait 20+ min for the oyster pancake, only got it after reminding our waiter multiple times. Our first visit was a win, our second visit was definitely a let down.
All of the food was beautifully prepared and inventive, but some dishes were definitely better than others. In particular, the house-milled jasmine rice rolls with dungeness crab, quail with szechuan salt, and chasiu iberico pork jowl were standouts, balanced, exceptionally executed, and just delicious. Meanwhile, the firecracker shrimp and golden coin are stunning and creative but felt less craveable to the last bite - the shrimp lacked acid and sugar and the mala spice was quite muted, and though the golden coin's crispy bao was exceptional, the chicken liver mousse overwhelmed the whole thing for me. I had to give my second bite to my partner, who loved it as a lifelong fan of chicken liver mousse. The cocktail of the week sounded amazing (milk washed earl grey infused spirit + coconut rum + makrut lime) but the actual execution didn't leave me thirsting for the next sip. My partner enjoyed the Flying Nimbus. The space was gorgeous and the service was friendly, but the pacing from the kitchen was a bit slow between dishes and courses, and a heads up to bring your own bag hook!
Sadly, this restaurant is proudly overrated. All dishes arrived lukewarm or at best unevenly warm. None of the dishes had any interesting or strong flavor profiles - we had to request spices on the side. The price to value ratio is perhaps the most significant disappointment of the experience. Our meal was $300 for two people and one of us doesn't drink- the other had one cocktail one glass of wine. We had one appetizer, one small plate and two entrees (each $50!) The service was very uneven, some servers were warm others appeared almost annoyed. Save yourself the headache of trying to get the reservations!
One of the best meals I've had in awhile. Food was incredible and our waiter was so helpful and cheerful. Can't wait to go back.
Thank you very much for everything. My brother loved everything there! Will definitely try to be back asap!

Over all everything is good. Our waiter Christian was amazing. Food was ok. Maybe my expatiation was higher since it was so hard to make the reservation.
Not all it's hyped up to be. Service was slow and unfriendly. We were told the duck required a preorder, then briefly given hope when our server said she'd check, only to overhear the manager say to offer the last one to others. The experience felt pretentious and disappointing, and the hype wasn't worth it. House music was not a great vibe either.
It was not a very welcoming experience. The hostess directed us to a table right by their big glass doors on a cold, wet wintry night. We made our reservation 30 days up in advance and she tells me all the better and empty tables were reserved. Hello? What am I? I suspect this place has a “ back door” policy. Our bottle of wine did show up quickly but the food service was slow as molasses. The firecracker shrimp was delicious but the sugarsnap pea dumplings couldn't be lifted out of the basket with the chopsticks because the dumplings fell apart. The quail was delicious but the salted egg yolk squash was messy to eat and tasteless. The maitake biang biang noodles were really delicious but the fish fragrant fish was lukewarm and not hot and steamy. The mochi ball dessert was very tasty and like a dim sum sesame ball but these mochi balls were filled with chocolate. The poached pear dessert was totally unclear in its concept. There are better Cantonese restaurants in this City without all the hype.
Food was fantastic! Each delicious dish had a surprising presentation with a different umami profile. We shared one Golden Coin and decided next time to order one each. It's a perfect beginning bite reflecting the level of excellent deliciousness to come. Next was the Crab Rice Roll, yum! It came in a bowl with a complex addictive broth. Maitake Biang Biang and Fish Fragrant Fish came last and We demolished the fish and were quite full. We boxed the remaining Biang Biang to take home so that we could save what little belly room we had for Mango Sago Sorbet. Oh my that hit the spot and was a perfect ending to our meal. It's going to be hard not to order the same things next time but want to try more dishes.
This was our second time at Crane The first time was exciting with a few blunders this time we left hungry and disappointed. The bar and wait staff were great the food cold wet and flavorless. Sorry we won't be back
