I rarely order takeout, but today I was feeling so sick, with a cough and my bronchitis flaring up, and I really needed something warm and comforting. I found this place — Tikal Restaurante y Panaderia — and it felt like a blessing from God. The food here is simple, but it’s made with so much love and care that it feels like it was made by my mom or grandma.

I ordered the Sopa de Res and the Tamales de Pollo, and both dishes were absolutely perfect. The soup was flavorful, hearty, and exactly what I needed to feel better — like a homemade cure. The tamale was soft and delicious, so comforting.

Thank you, Tikal, for making my day a little brighter and warmer. I highly recommend the Sopa de Res and the Tamales de Pollo. I will definitely order from here again whenever I need that comforting, home-cooked feeling. 🔝😊

I want to highly recommend this place, great service, I'm so sorry I didn't get my server's name, but let me tell you she was awesome, she gave me a sample for champurrado since I'm from a different country, she was opened to suggestions, gave us plenty of time to make our decisions on our food. Champurrado was spectacular, the costillas en Adobe were perfectly cooked, Chile relleno was good, even it wasn't my favorite an authentic Chapin said it tasted great, the chuchito was tasty, and the pan con chow mein was extremely good, we ordered it and couldn't eat it right away, and when we finally ate it, (after two days traveling with it, 2 nights at hotels room) it was just perfect, which is the reason am making this review, just finished it, it's too bad we ate it till today and we are too far away to go back for more... we are at Arizona, heading to San Antonio TX, but definitely if you are at San Francisco you should go and enjoy there awesome food and service. To my server, thank you for everything.

Cafe Tikal has all the elements of a good cafe with great comfort food. The cafe offers traditional Guatemalan food. I favor the coffee and breakfast breads (pan dulce). Cafe Tikal definitely is a standout in the Geneva/Mission area.

I never post a negative review but pretty upset about my experience.
1. Lady was rude after we asked what the different pastries were and what price it was. We are not latin so, It's not our fault as there is no descriptions and price on any of the pastries.
2. They charge a absurd brown bag charge to carry the pastries. How the hell do I carry the pastries, in my pocket? This is the first place of all bakeries that actually charge this. It isn't the amount. It's the principle. Again when we asked about this. She was rude again and gave a snarky look.
3. One of the pastries was stale and seems it has been sitting in the store for a while.
Never coming back again as it seems they don't want our business anyway.

New place on Excelsior, on Mission, one block away from Geneva it used to be a Pizza place for many years. Restaurant/Bakery serving a limited menu with few Breakfast and Lunch Items that also serves Guatemala Bread. The area was clean and I liked the light that comes in from the outside to make the place bright all around. I ordered the Picana special, the steak was well seasoned and came with whole black beans, plantains, very thin slice of queso fresco, a spoon of sour cream, the plate was served with two eggs that I asked to be make over easy and sadly the eggs were cooked well done, this plate included two home made tortillas wrapped in thin foil that looked that were made earlier, soggy and didn’t taste very well.
