We’ve moved to different parts of SF and have searched high and low for Indian restaurants that could live up to Tilak. We’ve come close but Tilak is really in a league of its own. The butter chicken is so rich and flavorful, hands down the best in SF. Our favorites are the butter chicken and the biryani, which comes topped with strings of sweet caramelized onions. We alwayslook forward to going back.

This place will soon turn into a template for the glorious days of 'the old' guard of Indian restaurants in the bay. In an unassuming interior painted bright with turmeric yellow you will find conventional north Indian food that you may soon long for, given the rapid evolution of the Indian food scene in the country.
I got the dahi papdi chaat and it needn't have come with the edible flowers. The chaat was good, though the tamarind date chutney could be better. I also ordered the saag channa and bature. The saag was delicious and creamy and the bature were not giant balls of dough, but a pair of oval shaped bread. They had been well leavened and were stretchy and paired great with the channa.
Overall I'd come here for comfort food on a cool night seeking warm home fare.

I don’t think you can do much wrong here. The biriyani is fantastic. And the curries good too, but run on the oily side.

Tilak serves a really nice dahi puri chaat that’s a perfect blend of sweet, tangy, and spicy flavors. The crisp puris are filled with yogurt, chutneys, and spices, creating a burst of freshness in every bite. It’s a must-try for chaat lovers and a great way to experience the vibrant flavors of Indian street food!

Love this place! The chicken korma was rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. The garlic naan was warm, fluffy, and had the perfect hint of garlic, making it a great companion to the korma. We also loved the vegetable pakora—crispy, flavorful, and an excellent start to the meal. The dipping sauces are awesome.
The service was friendly and attentive. Great value as well for the quality of food you receive.

Food was fine but absolutely zero atmosphere! We were there on a Saturday night and were the only people in there, really bright lights, no music (the only sounds were of washing up), and they seemed to be focused on app orders as there was a constant stream of drivers and our food took ages to arrive. The guy serving us was attentive at first but lost interest and we had to wave someone else over to take our order.
The food was tasty, although we ordered some dishes mild and some hot and couldn’t tell the difference in spice level.
