About YUJI

YUJI is a restaurant that offers a unique dining experience with its Kappo-style Japanese cuisine, similar to Omakase but with a focus on seasonal ingredients and various cooking techniques. The restaurant is intimate, located upstairs from another establishment with little signage, and has a small counter with no tables, seating only a few guests. The menu consists of 10 dishes, starting with a lovely appetizer platter, followed by dobin mushi, sashimi moriawase, grilled Chilean sea bass, tai shabu-shabu, chawanmushi, Japanese wagyu sukiyaki, shirauo tempura, truffle zosui with blue crab, and matcha creme brulee. Standout dishes include the baby broccoli, sashimi, tempura white fish wrapped in shiso leaf and matcha salt, and Chilean sea bass. The sake pairing is highly recommended. However, parking can be a challenge, and it may not be wheelchair accessible as it requires climbing up a set of stairs. YUJI is a hidden gem, offering legit sushi and craftsmanship, with the chef personally selecting ingredients and traveling to Japan regularly. The menu changes seasonally, and the set menu is worth the price due to the intimate setting and quality ingredients used. Guests have praised the experience as wonderful and special, especially noting the grilled black cod and matcha tiramisu. It’s considered one of the best omakase experiences in San Francisco, delivering a well-rounded meal that highlights expertly crafted cooked dishes. The seasonal menu rotation keeps each visit exciting, with crab specials during July–August and mid-November–December. Despite some cramped space, the interior remains cool and comfortable for enjoying the meal.

Excellent Japanese cuisine, service and staff are wonderful and helpful

I was much disappointed with my dining experience last night after reading how other patrons raved about the food quality and presentations. For a start, the place is hidden on the 2nd floor of a very rundown building where the main floor was boarded up and where there was bad urine staunch as you pass by to get to the stairs to the 2nd floor. There was no signage directing patrons to the restaurant. As I entered, there were 2 steps at the door and I almost tripped and fell flat...read full review
