Pre-pandemic this was one of my favorite taquerias. They made tortillas from scratch. This visit was underwhelming. Flavors were okay but too much has changed for me to want to visit again soon.

Bittersweet to see this business is closing on the 29th of this month. I sure need to come by for another burrito fix before they do! I will sure miss everything about this place. The homemade salsa, the fresh and flavorful ceviches, the protein plates, handmade tortillas, and mostly THE GIGANTIC BURRITOS!!! If anyone reading this knows of a fire burrito spot in sj, please, send recommendations!!!! I have my go tos, but chavelas takes the crown for the best burritos in town. If you hear about chavelas opening up elsewhere or renamed, best believe, I'll be there!

This spot is worth trying. They serve big portions for convenient prices. Consistently clean and with good character. Will come visit again.

The place was small, yet quiet, the food was freakin great. The caldo de res was perfect. ? Nice mixture of beef that fell apart when you cut it as it should, potatoes, etc. Just great. ??

If youre looking for a place with authentic tasting mexican food..youve found one! The huaraches are great, chile rellenos, and al pastor burrito. Definitely recommend!!

3.5 stars overall, but rounding up for the LOWEST prices I've seen for Mexican food in a while, and solid tacos! This is likely NOT the place you'll want to go if looking for a healthy meal since both the burrito and tacos were quite greasy, but hey, with grease comes flavor.. Chavelas definitely fits the definition for hole-in-the-wall, and they are located a few blocks outside of Downtown San Jose. I called my order in around 4pm on a Sunday, and it was only a 10 minute wait for my order to be ready. They weren't busy at the time I picked up my order, and I tried: -Super Burrito w/Carne Asada ($11, This was a GIGANTIC super burrito, and I liked the slight sear on the tortilla. Their carne asada was lightly charred and flavorful, but there were some pieces that were really gristly and chewy. I don't like pinto beans and they forgot my request for no beans, and I probably would've enjoyed this burrito a lot more without the beans. This was a great value though, and I would order it again (without beans). -Al Pastor & Carnitas Tacos ($2/each, Solid tacos! I really liked their al pastor, which was also nicely seared and flavorful. The carnitas were solid, but a little too salty. Note that the pico de gallo and salsa they add to their burrito and tacos was already quite spicy, and you'll want to ask them for mild salsa if you're sensitive to spice. However, if you like spice, make sure you ask for their orange sauce! It was on point SPICY. Only indoor dining is available at this time. Parking was ok to find at the time since there were a couple of street parking spots available.

I don't like giving bad reviews, but this is not authentic mexican food. They had no chiles, and they added mozzarella cheese on the sopes instead of cotija cheese or queso fresco. The food didn't taste fresh and the masa on the sopes wasn't fully cooked. There's so many mexican restaurants in San Jose and we ended up here. Never again not even worth paying the inexpensive food prices.

STOLE FROM ME! I paid cash and the man at the counter shorted me 10$! Theives! And the place is disgusting inside! They gave my friend a cup of ice with DIRT in it! The employee was rude and now I'm short $10! Don't go here..

Great menudo, best I've had so far. A lot of tripe, no corn which I don't mind. I pay for the tripe not the corn. I'll be here whenever I'm in San Jose. Better then another place I've tried by seven trees. I highly recommend this place.
