As a cultural technologist with a deep love for history, I specifically sought out Mee Heng Low for its incredible significance as the oldest restaurant in San Luis Obispo. It did not disappoint! Our server and hostess, Dana, was absolutely wonderful—both highly professional in her service and incredibly accommodating in sharing her rich historical knowledge of the building and its legacy. We got the baos (one steamed, one grilled), and both were great. The noodles were subpar, though, which was especially disappointing considering it’s a noodle house. We got the twice cooked pork noodles (there were hardly any noodles, mostly cabbage) and the low mein with chili peanut sauce and chicken, which was fine, but not worth the $18. The food is very good and always fresh, service is friendly as well. There is an issue with the hours, the restaurant says they’re open at 11 AM but they open later than that, sometimes after 12 PM. If you plan to eat here give yourself extra time, it never opens on time.
