Came to visit the l&l barbecue on 3rd avenue in downtown San Mateo. First time to this location. Location is under New Management and I couldn't tell the restaurant was very up to the l&l standard.
Clean tables plenty of seats. Pepsi soda fountain and Hawaiian drinks available. I had the pineapple orange flavor which is my favorite. The menu has regular plates and even mini plates available if you're not that hungry. My wife had the shrimp with rice and a Pepsi. We shared a Spam Masubi. I ordered the regular chicken katsu plate with rice and macaroni. The food was good. Parking is difficult. Plenty of street parking but it fills up fast in the evening and there is also a parking garage which is a bit of a walking distance but if you don't want to play parking wars I would just go for the parking garage and walk a short distance.

Chicken katsu is delicious here! It was juicy and crispy. Couldn’t ask for better chicken. The atmosphere was a bit outdated but I’ll definitely order food to go! Sign outside said under new management, give it a try.

Don’t come here. Horrible customer service.

I usually love l&l but will never be coming back here again.

I spent $13 on a mini Katsu and three dollars on a spam musubi… I didn’t realize I forgot to ask for an extra katsu sauce until after I paid. Normally Hawaiian food places, ESPECIALLY chains will just give me a small one.

He asked for $.50, I didn’t have cash and only had card, then he looked at my order… I assume he saw I didn’t tip, because this was takeout and food is already expensive…

And he wouldn’t even let me pay with card and just refused.

Like sir, a tiny katsu sauce was the difference between a repeat customer and a 1 star review.

Very bad customer service. The guy on the counter doesn't seem to be listening at all. Maybe he doesn't know how to speak or listen to English very well. Shouldn't be working behind the counter at all. Hire more literate people. This place will go downhill soon despite new management doesn't change a single thing in customer service. I will go to the Millbrae location. Better food and service. Grade for location and service: F- or aka Zero stars if rating is available.

It pains me to leave this 1 star review because I love the chain L&L Hawaiian. It is good food in generous portions, excellent value. Its largely because of what I found in my burger. There was a sliver of plastic, about two inches long. It looks like a piece left from opening a disposable plastic container, it must've been in the kitchen and fell into my food. As someone who worries about microplastics, I sincerely hope it only fell in during assembly and wasnt actually cooked into the meat. Beyond the piece of plastic (which may looks like onion in my pictures, but is 100% a sliver of plastic), the quality seems to have gone down compared to the last time my office ordered from there. We order different restaurants on doordash every Friday, and frequently choose L&L because of the large portion sizes. But for the first time, none of our orders had our names written on them. They always did when we ordered here in the past, so I suspect someone new was working. Additionally, I ordered the double BBQ cheeseburger. They gave me a regular cheeseburger without the BBQ sauce. I ordered the same thing last time, so I know they forgot because the absence of sauce was very noticeable. Mostly I'm bothered by the plastic because the food at least still all tasted good, I just hope they are more careful next time. We will think twice about ordering here for our next weekly doordash now.

every time I call this place, there’s always nobody to answer. I called once in a bit just to see if the place is open to answer my calls. Even when I come to visit the place, I always see the sign “ On break “ Why show on the website that you guys are open when you don’t bother to answer a phone calls? Or just show On the website that you guys are closed.
