Delicious & fresh Edomae style sushi! Counter sushi bar was a great place to sit & watch the chefs prepare nigiri & maki sushi.
BTW: Corn tempura was a taste treat! Yum :)
Can't wait to come back again to try more daily specials & favorites from the menu.
Reservations required about 1 week in advance.

I have been a fan of Sushi Sam’s for well over 30 years, back when it was Sam and his wife Mayuimi at the sushi bar.
The service at Sushi Sam’s is always amazing, starting with greeting you by name when you enter the restaurant by Kelvin and all the other staff.
When you watch Sam and his team of chefs behind the sushi bar, you can see why orders are delivered to the tables fast, yet they still look up to greet customers entering the restaurant and chat with those sitting at the sushi bar.
Yes, the food is also amazing, including my usual items such as
Edamame (Boiled soybeans)
Gomaae (Spinach with sesame sauce)
Hot Dog (Deep Fried Fish, Green Onion) Maki
Oysters
Sam Special (Shrimp Tempura) Hand Roll
Chili Dog (Spicy Tuna) Hand Roll
California Special (Crab, Avocado, Eel, Masago) Maki
Ikura (Salmon Roe) Nigiri
Toro (Fatty Tuna) Nigiri
Spider Roll (Soft Shell Crab)
I would also check out the specials of the day to see what is new, and of course oysters of available.
I was both happy to hear Sam and Mayuimi were planning to retire, yet sad to hear the restaurant would be closing.
I was excited to hear Koichi Ito, Head Chef and many of the Sushi Sam’s Staff and Manager were opening Sushi Edomata.
Tonight is my first time visiting Sushi Edomata and I have to say the service, vibe, food, everything is amazing and I can’t wait to return!

A Worthy Successor to a San Mateo Legend
Could the offspring of the beloved (and now retired) Sam’s in San Mateo really live up to its legacy? After dining at the newly opened Sushi Edomata, I can confidently say that not only does it live up to it, it might even be better.
From the moment we sat down, the experience was flawless. The wagyu was melt-in-your-mouth perfection, and the toro was rich, buttery, and beautifully balanced. This was some of the best we’ve had in the Bay Area. Every piece of specialty fish was masterfully prepared, highlighting the chef’s deep respect for traditional technique and high-quality ingredients.
It’s clear the team behind Sushi Edomata, many of whom worked at Sam’s, have poured their hearts into keeping that legacy alive while elevating it in every way.
To finish, we indulged in a few house-made desserts, crafted by their talented in-house pastry chef. Each one was a work of art light, creative, and the perfect end to an incredible meal. You can even check out her creations and place custom orders through her Instagram, which is conveniently linked on the restaurant’s page.
We truly enjoyed ourselves during our first visit and can’t wait to come back. Sushi Edomata is a must-visit for any sushi lover in the area.
This is a Famero Family approved establishment! Make a reservation but even then expect a wait because the food is that good people keep ordering and spend more time at the table!

The ‘it’ place in San Mateo & probably in the peninsula for Sushi was SUSHI SAM, then he retired in Dec! Good News .. the birth of EDOMATA SUSHI, with his nephew. Niece & Son-in-law carrying on Sushi Sam’s Legacy. Feels like coming back ‘home’ to a new location! Love the freshness of the fish! Food is as good as ever ! Definite repeat place !

Sushi Edomata is absolutely amazing!
Carrying on the incredible legacy of Sushi Sam’s, this spot honors tradition while delivering fresh, beautifully crafted sushi.
Every bite reflects the same care, authenticity, and artistry that made Sushi Sam’s so beloved. The fish quality is outstanding, the presentation is impeccable, and the atmosphere feels warm and welcoming.
It’s rare to find a place that both respects a legendary past and creates its own memorable dining experience — Sushi Edomata does exactly that.

The restaurant is bustling and the vibe is great! People are super friendly, including staff and customers. Feels like a neighborhood restaurant serving world class sushi. Best of both worlds. We ordered omakase. So good. Thank you chefs and staff.

Spin Off of Sushi Sam's, same crew. It is some good eating. Dragon Roll + Citrus Soy Sauce Salmon were great, among other items. Food was delicate, not too heavy.Good idea to make reservations.

They really brought the atmosphere from sushi Sam's with them when they moved here, but in a much nicer environment. Looking forward to eating here many more times in the coming years.
