AMAZING FOOD AND SERVICE I LOVED IT THERE 10/10 RECOMEND!!!!!
Sushi Sam “reopened” in this new location- and still delivers an unforgettable dining experience! The sushi is incredibly fresh - every piece is crafted with precision, showcasing the freshness of the fish and the balance of flavors. The melt-in-your-mouth toro, the buttery artic char, the delicate hamachi, the silky rich uni are standouts, while the specialty handrolls offer creative combinations that surprise and delight.
Beyond sushi, the appetizers and small plates are equally impressive. The crispy tempura is light and airy (we had a corn tempura which was all our favorite), the miso soup is comforting, and the house-made sauces elevate every bite.
Most of all, the service is impeccable - the team is attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about making your meal special.
Whether you're a sushi connoisseur or just beginning your journey, this place sets the bar high with its dedication to quality and service. Highly recommend for an unforgettable meal!
Absolutely delicious! Just go and thank me later!
Nice to see Sushi Sam’s back, with a new name !
Such a shame, its a beautiful restaurant with wonderful looking food, yet a horrifically managed front of house. My family flew in from philly for one thing: firefly squid, we called ahead and made a reservation days ahead of time, showed up for our 8pm reservation, only to wait 50 minutes to be sat, and then told they had no more firefly squid. As beautiful as the restaurant seems, you should be ready to wait for a while even if you have a reservation, and don't expect to get what youre looking for.
Absolutely fantastic experience! The sushi was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Each piece was crafted with care, and the variety on the menu was impressive. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, making great recommendations. The ambiance was perfect for a relaxed dining experience. Definitely one of the best sushi spots I’ve been to—highly recommend!

Great quality sushi and sashimi cuts! Might want to call ahead and reserve in advance if you want to avoid a long wait but it's all worth it for the sushi quality you get here.
My wife and I walked in around 7pm for dinner with no reservations. The establishment has the right to turn us away for not having reservation. It’s how this man was so insensitive and denied us with no remorse. Shaking his head like we’re stupid walking in there with no reservation.
I don’t have a review for the food and atmosphere because I didn’t get a chance to experience those.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the best sushi restaurant in San Mateo. Quality ingredients and well prepared.

Very solid sushi, very authentic to our experience in Japan. The lunch deal is good considering the area prices

It is one of the best Japanese restaurant. It has been around for over 36 years. They are famous for their fresh sashimi and many type of cooked Japanese food. There are also famous for their omakase.
They also changed ownership as of yesterday.
One of the biggest problem is getting seats or reservation. They are always booked sometimes overbooked. On the weekends if you don't have a reservation. Don't bother. You are not able to get a seating. Now they only take reservation except for Friday and Saturday lunch.
There's also the issue of the owner Sam. He is over 70 years old and sometimes I don't even see him at the restaurant. When he is not there I felt the quality of the food is less than before.
We visited the place today, I can say their overall qualities are about the same. But some items they no longer offer or no longer on the menu.
They also increase the price on some items by offering only one piece vs two pieces like before.
They are only open from Tuesday to Saturday evening and Friday and Saturday lunch.

Every dish was an experience. I absolutely love the quality and artistry of the menu. And it's not pretentious. Come as you are and enjoy some fine dining. You're going to want to try: Arctic Char, Toro, Wagu, Ocean Trout and Uni ?
