Red Whale has brought hipster coffee to San Rafael. If you are a coffee aficionado and you haven’t been here yet, you need to be. I love a good latte and Red Whale does not disappoint. Their lattes can easily hang with the likes of Blue Bottle and Equator. And if you are a drip coffee or cold brew person, these guys look legit. They have a wall of glass equipment dedicated to making cold brew (it’s worth going just to see that wall!).There has been as much thought put into the space as they have put into their coffee - with a room dedicated to coffee paraphernalia and a lounge room equipped with a seating area, record player and vintage pinball machines. One thing to note is if you’re in a rush, you may or may not get your coffee quickly. Sometimes the regulars like to chat up the baristas which can slow things down a bit but the coffee is definitely worth the wait.

Had the very weird experience ordering a coffee, waiting about 10 min while the baristas chatted loudly with their friends in the shop, then finding my coffee had been sitting on the bar (blocked by the chatting friend) and they hadn’t said anything to me - even though I was the only customer waiting for a drink and I was standing right in front of them. Would have made a funny SNL sketch but too weird for me in real life.

Farmers market: No idea why I keep thinking it will be better this time. It never is. Incredibly slow, aggravating experience. Server kept asking what the order was, would go back and chat with people in the truck, return a bit later to say they were out of what I wanted. Again asked the order and repeated it back wrong!! Kept trying to pay via phone and that didn't work. Finally got the drink and it was horrible. Not at all what I ordered. Couldn't deal with the idea of returning and asking for my money back.

this is a review of the farmers market stand. super disorganized. today the guy asked me over 5 times what my order was and still got it wrong in the end. the people in line behind me gave up and left when they realized ordering was hopeless. the coffee is overpriced and yet gross. if you see red whale at the farmers market, steer clear.

Tasty but the drinks are expensive. I got a chocolate cold brew (rich and sweet, $6) and my boyfriend got an iced dirty chai (recommend getting this drink sweetened, $7.25). We also got a piece of morning glory bread which was really good and only $2.75. The inside is cramped so it's not a spot to hang out for a long time but they have pinball machines in the back which is fun!

Excellent and friendly service and the coffee is really good too. Nice choice of goodies to go with your drink choice. The only drawback is that it can get a bit noisy, especially if someone is playing the arcade games.Parking: Street parking is best option. There is a small driveway, which is usually used for a quick pickup that is not so quick.

Excellent coffee! Brewed to order as you like! Baristas are friendly and tell jokes while you wait. There's a real turntable with records, pinball machines, a popcorn machine art on the walls... just go there!!! Fun place!!!
