Good sushi!!!
Best sushi in Solana Beach
I had high hopes. I was very disappointed. They kept the door open and it was freezing inside. The waitress tried to close it since we the first table by the door but she said management told her to keep it open. It was 50 degrees and felt colder with the air gushing in. Needless to say, we hurried up and left.
A different waiter gave me the “total” when I asked for the check . I saw no bill and no itemized check . He just said my total verbally and asked me to tap my card. I am not sure if I liked that.
Will not be coming back
We loved our first visit to Kai Ola on Cedros so much that I posted about it on Facebook along with photos. The Hawaiian special had been beautifully plated with orchids and sauces that were swirled into a beautiful design, and the flavors were amazing. The second visit, unfortunately, was disappointing. The fish was grossly chewy and the rice wasn’t sticky and fell apart, so the rice from my tuna maguro ended up in the soy sauce bowl and the tuna got soaked so was overly salty. My friend’s tuna roll wasn’t impressive either and fell apart when we tried to share it. Worse, the service was horrendous. We tried to flag down our waitress many times and in most cases gave up and just asked our sushi chef to relay a message for us. We had asked her in the beginning for separate checks, and of course we’e presented with one in the end.
I’d give it another chance, but was sorely disappointed. I know it’s not up to the quality of our past visits to their sister restaurant in Leucadia. Only posting because I think the owner should be aware of it since he wasn’t around.
Such a hidden gem! Best sushi in Del Mar, Solana Beach! Our server Anna was lovely! The food was fantastic!
Please go back to a tasting room that serves sushi. Miss that place.
Last night I chose Sushi and Tap over many great options thinking it would be fun: instead I had a waitress with short, black hair who was unsmiling the whole time, never went further beyond her job and made me feel unwelcome - even electing a little cheer to her BOH team when I got out of my chair so she could leave. It was the rudest customer service experience I’ve ever had. It made everything feel overpriced considering the service was disturbing and even felt slightly racist. I will never be back.
Great service and incredible live music tonight!! Made the vibe so much better and fun.
Local Roots Solana Beach: clean, modern, and friendlier than a dog at a barbecue! Work or play, have it your way with rotating kombucha and chef's sushi menu. Wifi, TVs and indoor outdoor space make it ideal for people watching or mingling. Just a heads up, it's a bit pricer with fewer options than nearby spots like Station Sushi, but hey, quality ain't cheap! ?? ??
Also agree with other reviewers, James is a cool guy. ?
Place is amazing - fantastic food, awesome bucha, and the service is impeccable. James is the best.

So my brother gave me a giftcard for christmas to local roots, so i go there and the 1st thing they tell me was i couldnt use the GC for sushi!!!!! So i ended up buying 50.00 worth of kambucha!! They said its 2 different stores inside. Cash is cash, thanks for leaving this info out b4 my brother bought the GC.Unbelieveable What a croc....1st time there, last time i go back.
So I got a gift card for Christmas to local roots, excited and went last night for dinner to try it out....... and this is why I don't go out much to establishments, service sucked, 45 minutes to order a stinking sushi roll!!! And loud in there, they were doing trivia. Ughhhh....had 1 kambucha...God I left hungry didn't even eat sushi....young man named omar was trying to be nice about my experience, thanks for trying. But overall a horrible experience at local roots, sorry guys, I expect excellent customer service when I do out spending good money. Merry whatever.
Very light on the fish for a $23 poke bowl (Rainbow - tuna, yellowfin and salmon). Lots of salad/cabbage and rice but had to hunt for the fish - can you find it? (photo). Crunchy roll was fair and also thin but tasted good.Decent craft beer selection too.
Best place ever! The bartender, James, is super nice and personable, the food is delightful, and the alcoholic drinks are so good! You’ll get some good conversation with some regulars and the staff and be really full and happy when you leave!
This place is a hidden gem. Incredible hard kombucha and a great selection of sushi. Incredibly warm and welcoming environment, our bartender (James) does a fantastic job. I wish I lived closer so I could be a regular, I will be back for sure.
