My wife and I ate at El Portal Friday night and this was our first time here. Great reception and we were immediately seated in the outdoor patio. Marciahis were playing and going from table to table for requests. This was a very pleasant surprise. Overall, good food and prices. We also enjoyed different margaritas and they were all delicious. Their staff was attentive, helpful, and friendly. We will return.

Dining out on the patio, in the shade, in a secluded niche between busy Colorado Blvd and Green Street in Pasadena was a real treat. The restaurant was busy enough, but pleasantly quiet under large shade umbrellas on the brick patio. Our service was excellent; prompt, friendly, accurate. The Mexican-American menu is pretty standard but includes lots of variety... with seafood, beef, chicken and fresh veggies in virtually every combination with spicy rice, brown beans and guacamole. Our chicken quesadilla ($18) was very good. Our Carne Asada ($23) plate with soft tacos was OK; the beef was a bit tough, and I didn't care for the flavor of the tangy Yucatan-style marinade. The accompanying rice, too, was flavored Yucatan style. We will probably return, to enjoy the pleasant setting, and try some different menu features.

We were two couples for lunch. The parking off Green St. was great (no charge). The food was definitely better than the usual “tacos, beans & rice” served at most Mexican restaurants. The service was great and it has a nice interior.

It’s a basic run of the mill Mexican food place. The staples are good but I have yet to try anything other than the tacos, tortas, or burritos. It’s good to take care of that craving but isn’t the place to seek out more than once.
I accidentally ordered here online early in the morning on November 4, I meant to order at a restaurant of the same name in Auburn CA. Since online ordering didn’t offer cancellation, I called and left several messages. I finally got in touch with them before they made the order, but they said I needed to speak to the manager to get a refund. The manager finally called me back and lied to justify not refunding the order she said: The food was already made - it wasn’t. 2. I had done this same thing 3 times! - I live in Northern CA and hadn’t even ordered at our local El Portal before. She was extremely rude and aggressive. If you eat there, check your bill twice, they’re not above cheating people.
