Ate here on Monday and wow everything about this place is BOMB. Every dish was beyond incredible & the service was so so great. Literally could not recommend enough. I guarantee you’ll have an incredible meal here. If the carrot karkiage is on the menu please get it. Same with the beef shank & bok choy. And for dessert if you see the carrot & buckwheat cake congratulations because oh my god your life is gonna be different forever. What an incredible experience! Cant wait to go back

Looking for a dining experience that seamlessly blends chic brasserie aesthetics with a comfortable atmosphere? This Japanese restaurant has got you covered, catering perfectly to both casual outings and business meetings, and it's equally ideal for a romantic date night, thanks to its cozy ambiance.

Beyond the inviting dining area, there's the option to sit at the bar, where you can indulge in expertly crafted cocktails or choose to dine from the full menu. The culinary offerings are vast, which might be challenging for those new to Japanese cuisine, but it's all part of the adventure.

A great way to experience the variety is by sharing plates. I highly recommend trying the veggie pickles plate, the carrots tempura, and the veggie ramen for starters. Also, do yourself a favor and don't pass up on the oyster mushrooms and the sashimi plate, both are perfect for sharing and a testament to the kitchen's prowess. Last their ramen are perfect and they have a great veggie one, that will transport you in another continent.

Vegetarian options: Lot of different options for vegetarian, not necessarily indicated as such but just ask in case of doubt.

Parking: You can park in Abbott Kinney or in the parking lot behind the street block.

The plum negroni, persimmon salad, and duck meatballs were all outstanding. My server Jake was really remarkable. Great service and good atmosphere.

I expected more of RVR given the reputation of who’s behind it. I felt the food was good, but not memorable, the service was okay, typical LA service and the atmosphere was okay. It’s a very small place, communal tables like Gjelina, and while we have a good experience I wouldn’t go back.

Mediocre, overpriced, and rude service. Ultimately, a bootleg Benihana. Save your money and go to Ralph’s. Honestly, their sushi is better.

Deeply Disappointing Dining Experience

Had dinner here last night and left both hungry and frustrated. Despite spending $100 per person, the food was mediocre at best and the portions were small…. And we still left hungry.

What really stood out was being charged $10 for a tiny glass of Coke - no refills, no can on the side, just three sips of soda. It felt deceptive since who really checks the price of a soft drink on a menu?

To add insult to injury, the hostess pressured us about leaving by less than an hour after being seated, claiming they were busy, yet the bar area where we sat had seven empty seats that remained vacant throughout our entire visit.

For the price point, you expect quality food and transparent service. This place delivered neither. There are far better restaurants in the area where your money will be better spent. Needless to say, I won't be returning.

We dined at RVR (pronounced River) as a table of four, including a baby, and from the moment we arrived, the hospitality was warm and welcoming. I had been particularly excited to visit RVR because Travis Lett, the renowned chef behind Gjelina, had been quite silent for a few years. His return with this new project was something I had eagerly anticipated, given his reputation for meticulous attention to detail and the care he brings to each culinary endeavor.

At RVR, we tried nearly everything on the menu, and it was a culinary adventure. Every dish was exceptional, but the standout for me was the sautéed fried rice with mushrooms. While fried rice might seem like a humble option compared to other offerings, this version was easily the best I’ve ever had—rich in flavor and texture. Another highlight was the hand rolls. The first time we ordered them, they arrived a bit soft, as the seaweed wasn’t as crisp as I would have liked. However, after mentioning this to the waitstaff, they took the feedback graciously. On our second visit, the hand rolls arrived perfectly crisp and were delivered first, ensuring that the seaweed had just the right crunch.

The house pickles were another surprise—simple yet absolutely delicious. The variety they offer is impressive, and the pickled beetroots were my personal favorite. The botarga salad was an explosion of flavors, a dish that is perfect for sharing among friends, as we did.

On one of our visits, we brought along a one-year-old baby, and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. They provided a baby chair and were incredibly understanding despite the inevitable mess. Their kindness made the experience even more memorable.

Now, let’s talk about the ramen—it’s a must-try. RVR is located in the former site of a ramen house, and it seems like they’ve carried forward that tradition with their own unique touch. It’s clear that ramen is one of their signature dishes, and I highly recommend it.

And then, of course, there’s the chocolate cake. I can confidently say it’s one of the best I’ve ever tasted. It’s unmissable—definitely order it if you’re there.

Throughout our visits, the staff was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, always ensuring that dietary restrictions and allergies were taken into account. Their weekend DJ sessions, where they play vinyl records and display the album covers, added a special vibe to the dining experience—no need to Shazam, just enjoy the music.

In my opinion, RVR is here to stay. It offers a fantastic izakaya-style experience, something that this neighborhood has long needed. The restaurant’s casual, walkable location only adds to its charm. Whether for lunch or dinner, I strongly recommend that everyone give RVR a try. With Travis back in the kitchen, the food is simply outstanding.

Food was really good
Flavorful with lots of variety — some a little too salty
Service was super slow — maybe they are still working out the kinks
We showed up at 5pm for walk-in and there was already a line — we just made it in

Came here, waited in line for 10 minutes, and the hostess assured me she added me to the waitlist and the wait would be “1 to 2 hours.” Took my number and everything.

Came back 90 minutes later, waited in line 10 minutes to check to see where I was in the queue. I WAS NEVER EVEN ADDED TO THE QUEUE. Was told “30 to 60 minutes” and only then got a confirmation text that I was added to the list.

I won’t be back. Horrible experience for a first time guest. Others without a reservation walked right in and sat at the bar. Total waste of time… plenty of other decent places on Abbot Kinney who can figure out how to use a tablet.

Have been 2x already since it opened and this place is wonderful on so many Levels. It’s a re-boot of head chef Travis’s former restaurant MTN, and if you’ve been previously you will not be disappointed… They still have those amazing Ramen bowls, and several types of the best Gyoza I’ve ever tried, Alongside a few other classics. The shrimp friend rice bowl couldn’t be any better, and the duck meatballs with spicy mustard (!) well I could sit and eat like 30 of those bad-boys. The kicker - they thoughtfully enclosed the space with a new expansive skylight system so it’s warmer on chilly evenings and also made some furniture changes to allow this cozy itzakaya to feel more spacious, and they now have FULL bar, need I say more…? I don’t have to but I will, Travis and every member of the team we rubbed elbows with are super kind, thoughtful about your experience and super knowledgeable about the food and cocktails. Overall an A++ all around, well done guys !!
