Since my favorite Indian restaurant of all time has closed down (RIP Star of India), I have to find a suitable replacement. Tandoor is pretty good but my only problem is the price. It’s just about $20 for any entree you order and then they come in the smallest containers. So, for instance, the chicken tikka masala was $20 and there was probably less than 10 cubes of chicken in the container. Same goes for the palak paneer so it costs a lot of money for one person to eat, let alone two or more unless they have a lunch buffet like star used to.

Not sure why the rating on this is only 3.8 given that the food is great, the prices are unbeatable, and it's been a staple of downtown New Haven even before they changed the name to Tandoor. My bro and I had post-Christmas lunch with the Buffet option and it was fantastic (Bro got a vegan dish, I had the Vindaloo). Underrated!

Found this place watching A Julia Robert’s film, After the hunt, on Amazon prime and so glad I went. Best Indian food since I’ve left London. Great location, great portions, reasonable price and courteous owners.

Restaurantji Recommends
I have used this restaurant for catering two business meetings in Hamden. I remember first using them in 2024 at a meeting for 10. It was my first time ever tasting butter chicken & naan. It was delicious. I had another meeting recently for 50 and wanted authentic food, generous portions on a limited budget as I work for a nonprofit company. I contacted the owners and gave them our order which was comprised of butter chicken (oh yeah), plain white rice, naan, katchumber salad (which came with a mint dressing that was very spicy 🌶️ but so good), paneer tikki masala (vegetarian dish) and gulab jamun (my first time trying this dessert which I would describe as a very syrupy donut hole). It tasted delicious but should come with a sweetness overload warning. So if you are diabetic or do not like sweetness, then this dessert is not for you. However this group enjoyed it. 😄
All the food was fabulous. Everyone was raving about it. Even those folks who did not know what butter chicken was, tried it and sopped the sauce with the naan. They even went back for seconds.
As the person who organizes meals/catering for our meetings, I worry about portion size and hope that everyone likes the meal and that I can also stick to my limited budget. I did not have to worry with Tandoor Cuisine. The owners were in contact with me every step of the way and made sure that this was an enjoyable experience. They were very friendly and professional.
I recommend them and will use them again.

Their buffet is pretty good. I went late so some item was a little hard to eat like naan and chicken lollipop. But,other than that their paneer tikka masala was top notch and goat/lamb curry was also pretty nice to eat. For 17 something dollars its a win. I would recommend people to go early though. you will get fresh food and can enjoy every item. Also host seemed nice and there was one other lady she was also really nice.

I don't usually post negative reviews the goat biriyani(ordered on door dash) is very bad filled with bones and the goat is not cooked well and even the rice is overly mixed and packed with masalas.
Sorry.

Julia Roberts brought me here lol but back in the day this was an ok restaurant. The house of naan 2 minutes down is exceptional.
I tried buffet here they had like 10 different items but the problem is not even single item doesn’t feels good, wrost food i ever tasted in Connecticut.
