This place used to have the best Mexican food in New Haven - the carnitas and the thick, slightly yellow salsa verde were especially good - but now it's closed! Last time I was there the staff told me they'd be moving to a new location further down Grand, but I can't find their new spot anywhere! I'm going to be seriously bummed if those carnitas are gone forever...

Is the best Mexican food in New Haven. Go.

Great tacos, try the tongue. Great carnitas. Also the tortillas, and the price is right. Atmosphere is the real deal. We get take out carnitas all the time.

I was pretty excited coming here, given the high reviews on yelp. It is pretty cool that they make fresh tortillas in house. Unfortunately this is authentic in a not-very-tasty kind of way. I really wanted to like it, but the meat wasn't too flavorful and it tasted greasy. I'll have to keep looking for good Mexican food in the area.

This place is awesome. Good Mexican food that is authentic. They make your food to order.

Lovely tacos - the carnitas and al pastor were top quality!

This is the real deal. Nothing fancy. Don't come here expecting quaint ambiance. The tortillas are the best I have had on the East and the tacos are amazing.

Okay so this is the best Mexican food I've found so far for the price. My first attempt to visit this place was a bust as they were closed at 6 on a Wednesday. I went back a few weeks later on a sat and had success. Having the ability to speak Spanish is a HUGE plus, the waitress wasn't really excited to serve me, but I finally got a menu and placed my order. Tacos were good carnitas was my fav, beans were delicious and rice is the most authentic I've found. Tacos were$1.50 each burrito was $7.50 and a side of beans and rice set me back $6.00. Overall food was tasty, but I will continue searching for more authentic food. The neighborhood is a little sketchy, but seemed safe enough. Didn't have enough money to try the tortillas, but they looked yummy! A good 6 inch or so high stack for $1.75.

I agree with previous reviews: this place, folks, is the real deal. A large dance hall-style eating area, it's certainly not fancy, but the tortillas are incredible. The tomatillo sauce that accompanies the chips is awesome, but the tacos are the reason to come. Following the advice of other yelpers, I tried the el pastor, carne asada, carnitas and the lengua; the el pastor and the carnitas are the best, hands down. Fantastic meal, washed down with a beer, for less than $10.

I'll echo what others have already said. This place is legit. no atmosphere to speak of, unless you count the TV blaring Spanish soap operas (points for authenticity). But the tacos are worth the trip. al pastor and carnitas are my faves. tongue is good. Salsa is delicious. all washed down with a Jarritos Mandarina soda. Feels just like Mexico. and handmade fresh tortillas!! una paquete para llevar, por favor.

Amazing New Haven gem! Muy autentico. This place rivals some of my favors joints in CA, and the fact that you can get a giant tower of fresh handmade tortillas for less than $2 is just crazy to me. Meat eater's paradise. Enjoy!

This is place for real. Tortillas by the kilo and tacos de lengua! However, this is in what seems to be a rough neighborhood and the place itself is more like a warehouse. If you want an upscale place, this is not it. If you want something very close to street food from Mexico, this is it.

If you are serious about Mexican food, this is the place. We go there at least once a week for a couple pounds of corn tortillas made fresh each morning. They really are the best tortillas I've had since moving from south Texas. The food always looks good too, but as I usually pick up my tortillas at 10 in the morning, a beer and plate of carnitas just isn't calling to me, even though it is just the ticket for lots of folks getting of the night shift, God love 'em.
