I have never been this disappointed here, and we come to Astoria at least once a week.

First, we were put on the waitlist and told we’d get a text when our table was ready. Guests who arrived right before us were seated and eating while we were still waiting. There were 3 open tables next to them. When we checked in, the host shrugged it off with, “Oh, I forgot to text you.” No apology.

Once seated, I went to discreetly speak to the manager regarding the tables situation. We waited over 45 minutes with no food. Our server finally came only to ask what we wanted to drink, even though we had already ordered food. The table seated after us got their food before us. When we complained, suddenly our food showed up in two minutes, undercooked, overly spicy, and honestly inedible.

When we spoke to the manager, again, he acted like he wanted to make it right. Our plates were still full of the noodles we couldn’t eat, and he said, “Oh my god, you guys are not going to pay for the food.” Fine. But instead of offering to replace it or bring us something else, he just took the plates away, leaving us hungry. If the food is “on you,” that’s only because we didn’t get to eat it.

To make things worse, they brought us shots we never asked for, which was a ridiculous idea, because we came to eat not to drink.

The whole experience was careless, dismissive, and completely lacking in hospitality. For a place that knows us as regulars, the way we were treated tonight was unacceptable.

We have always loved Astoria, and we would be happy if management would reach out to us, so we could give them another chance.

Astoria is hands down the best Chinese restaurant in town. The flavors are bold, consistent, and everything feels made with care. The mapo tofu is incredible, the cumin lamb is packed with flavor, and the dan dan noodles are a must. Don’t skip the dumplings either — they’re always spot on.

On top of the food, the cocktails here are some of the best around and pair perfectly with the menu. Add in the lively atmosphere, and it’s easily one of DC’s go-to spots for Chinese food. You certainly will need to make reservation in advance.

Updated Review:
We just came back again, and once more the food absolutely hit the spot. The braised pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth good, the crispy basil eggplant was perfectly done, and the watercress dish was super fresh and flavorful. Everything was amazing all over again—Astoria really knows how to deliver consistency and quality.

Food is great. Drinks are great. Their insistence on playing deafening bass music through a speaker above our table, which they would not turn down on request, was miserable.

Love the rustic railroad style of the restaurant.
I had a reservation and was sat right away.
Service was great , every staff member that walked by checked on me .
I ordered from the vegan options . Noodles were delicious and slightly spicy the impossible beef and tofu was ok and not my favorite.
I agree with other reviews that the portion size doesn’t quite match the price.
I got a home made lemonade which was delicious however the bartender was making some really great looking cocktails that I’m sure also tasted good.

I would give a five stars for their Sichuan cuisine. Not many items on the menu but mostly are signature Sichuan dishes. Ordered little noodle, not as spicy as the authentic one but still well balanced the taste. I like the chick pea added. And the hours are super friendly for night owls. Definitely try when you are hungry late night.

Astoria is incredibly moody and romantic, making it the perfect date night/first date spot. It's very small inside, so keep that in mind on a busy Friday night or make a reservation ahead of time.

We found the menu to be a little difficult to navigate, but the staff was eager to offer recommendations that didn't disappoint. We ordered the Chili Wontons, Chimichurri, and the Red Braised Pork - all 10/10! Plates are small, meant to be shared, and come out as they're prepared. Whether you're going for the food, the cocktails, or both, it's so worth the price.

TL;DR - Great food, great vibes, and a place to eat a lot of good food.

Have been to this spot almost 10 times and want to give it a holistic review. I have never made a reservation for this spot and it is damn busy. The longest I have had to wait was 45 min for a party of 6, but I would recommend getting a reservation if you can. The host is rude almost every time I am here, but the waiter is always great. Go to order has to be the Beef Noodles, if you can get this, get it (9.5/10). Also love the walnut shrimp (9.2/10), Chili Wontons (8.5/10), and the Pea Shoots (9.2/10). If I am being honest though, I felt like the quality of food here has been declining, not sure if there was a chef change, but once in a while the food can be not worth it at all. Hopefully they can get that fixed because I do really enjoy it.

Food is very good in terms of taste. Baby bok choy is very good. Perfectly cooked and nicely flavored. Lamb noodles have really good broth and tender meat. The wide noodle itself has decent texture as well.
Portion size of each dish is small considering the price, suitable for 1 person. I alone finished one serving of bok choy and lamb noodles.
Indoor has very loud music. My ears were constantly abused by the loud music until the server turned it down a bit. Many thanks to her! Sit outside if possible.

Astoria DC may have some of best wontons in all of DC. Highly suggest booking a reservation in advance, this place tends to get very busy.

The host was extremely professional and accommodating.

Staff was attentive and friendly.

10/10 must go to

i was very disappointed by this restaurant, especially since it has been recommended to me many times. first of all, we came here for our anniversary and it was never even acknowledged. it’s whatever, but i feel like for a restaurant this expensive it is an oversight. service was BAD. hostess was dressed in a stained print t-shirt and sweatpants, and was extremely dismissive. we watched her rudely respond to guests all night. waitress took our order once and never checked in again - we had to flag her down for another round of drinks and for the check after waiting 30+ minutes. she seemed so irritated the entire time. one plus was the drinks were delicious. minus - they were all $18, regardless of what you got and super slow. the food was gentrified sichuan. i love sichuan food and it fell so short for me. it seemed they didn’t use real ingredients, and even classic dishes fell short. it was bland as hell. i feel like this should just be a tiki cocktail bar with small plates. won’t be back for food
