The best avocado toast I’ve ever had! This was the perfect avo toast with a fried egg, tomatoes, picked onions and super fresh/flavorful avocado! The service was great and the cafe area was clean/easygoing

Great breakfast food. But their coffee is undrinkable: we a drip and a pour over. Both were impossible to drink, ended up getting a matcha latte, which was decent. But again, the food and service were amazing.

I’ve visited Emissary Kalorama three times over the past two weeks. The espresso drinks have been consistently great, as has the food. The food is made to order, so it takes a bit of time. My disappointment is in the counter service. A smile is free and small coffee shops are usually known for being warm and welcoming. Each of the three times I visited I stood patiently at the counter, with a smile on my face, waiting to be acknowledged while the barista did her thing (like…2 ft in front of me…face to face). Only when she was completely done with everything would she make eye contact or otherwise acknowledge me. And then, it was purely transactional. Minor detail, perhaps, not great when you want $19 for a breakfast burrito.
I am a big fan of this Emissary location. I've been going here consistently for the last 3 years, but have noticed lately that the atmosphere and service has shifted significantly within the last year. In terms of the atmosphere, the dishwashing station in the main seating area can be LOUD, and quite unpleasant with the clanking of the dishes overlapping with the coffee machine. The service is kind and nice, but I find that it's less of the neighborhood-y coffee shop that it used to be.

Chai latte was disgusting. Ordered, and then waited ten minutes for my drink. Customers who came in and ordered after me got their drinks before me. After a long wait, a barista finally asked if I was waiting for a drink. Overall disappointing.

The coffee is pricey, almost $7 for a flat white, and inconsistent. I’ve had one great flat white from a female barista but few others have been mediocre.

The empanadas were fantastic! They were a great size, tasted so fresh and the dough was 10/10. You can’t beat the price either- $4 for one which is a great value in comparison to other spots like Colada Shop.
There’s limited seating available since it’s a small shop, and all the drinks they were making looked great too.

The restaurant itself is appealing but the workers have a sour attitude towards a specific demographic. The coffee tasted old and needs work. For those visiting the DC area, I would recommend going to a different mom and pop shop.

Very disappointed the stopped carrying Pergamino coffee. I’m not sure why they are continuing to advertise as if the collab continues when it doesn’t
