Johnny is a saint. An artist. A master of his trade. His sandwiches are soul-restoring. He assembles each one with great care, producing flavorful works of art. The quantity of meat is tremendous.
This place makes Compliments Only across the street look like Subway. And Subway look like straight hog slop. There’s no better way to fuel your day than with a sandwich from Johnny’s. I salute you, sir.

TL;DR: Hands down one of the best Italian subs in DC! Tucked in the back of a convenience store, run by a master of his craft. Don't skip the cherry pepper relish!

Absolutely phenomenal, fantastic job. This was my first time here and I’m blown away. Johnny said he’s about to do their own brick and mortar too with an expanded menu. Super excited to try it!

Johnny's Gourmet Deli and Subs is a hidden gem located in the back of a small convenience store in DC. The owner is described as a saint, an artist, and a master of his trade who runs a true one man show. He handles all orders, preps sandwiches, takes payments, and dishwashing, while still taking the time to chat with customers. The menu is written on a blackboard featuring hot and cold sandwiches, as well as breakfast options. His sandwiches are soul-restoring, assembled with great care, and the quantity of meat is tremendous. The Italian sub is hands down one of the best in DC, with fresh, generous helpings on great bread. The cherry pepper relish is a game changer, bringing a mild, wonderful heat that completely enhances the flavors. The deli meats are fresh and flavorful, the cheese is high-quality, and the bread is a baked marvel. The experience is phenomenal from start to finish. The owner is about to do their own brick and mortar with an expanded menu, and they are moving seven blocks in a few weeks.
