This was probably my least favorite DMV restaurant this year. Some food was too salty, some food was too bland. Flavors were one dimensional and left nothing memorable in my mouth. Plating was mediocre, ambience was mediocre, and but the prices were incredibly high for what was offered. The 10% service fee is pretty ridiculous considering what was offered at this place

The food was delicious. We had a number of things - mango salad, the potatoes, the dry beef curry, the pickled pineapple and roti and the Penang street noodles. Overall, everything we had was delicious and tasty. The highlight for me however was the service. Our waiter was Peter. He is hands down one of the best waiters I’ve ever had in my life. He was so attentive and considerate. He always seemed to anticipate our needs and took care of them expeditiously. Then we found out it was only his second day working- wow! So incredible for only being his second day. So overall, atmosphere was good, food was good and service by Peter was FANTASTIC!

Mohammed was amazing! We had excellent service and amazing food. He made the noodles vegetarian for me. We also really enjoyed the desserts, very unique flavors. We will be back!

Some friends had been here for dinner and wanted to introduce us to this restaurant, so we had dinner on a recent Saturday night. Starting with the food, it was excellent. Everything was fresh, tasty, and bursting with flavors. Really enjoyed everything that we had (dry curry beef, spicy hakka noodles, and baby bok choy). Want to try everything else on the menu, now, as well. Our server was very good - attentive to beverage & water refills, and very helpful for explaining the menu and making recommendations. Next visit to DC, we will need to come back to try more dishes from the menu.

As a Malaysian, I had mixed reviews about my home cuisine produced here. I first visited it when they first opened around 6 years ago. I was overwhelmed by the attempt to do too much on the menu, and I couldn't give the place a fair review. But visitors from out of town insisted on going there, and I obliged. This time, the menu was more focused, and I ordered a few dishes. The highlights that reminded me of home were Chow Kueh Teow that had the required wok hei, and the Beef Rendang melting in the mouth perfumed with spices. Some of the dishes fell in the midrange. The lows were the chicken Satay that was devoid of a good marinate and the chicken in Nasi Ganja that was crispy but lacking a good seasoning or marination before the frying. Yes, I'm nitpicking, but for a Michelin starred place, I need to be, especially for my home cuisine. However, I will be back for the highlights and mid-level dishes.

Most of the food was good, some dishes were too spicey. Good service. But the main issue and probably the reason why I won’t come back is the 10% service fee!! I have
never seen something like this before! It ended up being expensive!

Our server, Mustafa, was helpful, kind, and so friendly! He made us feel right at home and accommodated all of our allergy concerns. We had a great time! My husband said it was his favorite meal he’s had in the city.

My family and I decided to try Makan after finding out it’s one of the very few Malaysian restaurants in the DMV area. We were excited to come and try to the food since we’re all from Malaysia so we figured it would be nice to have a taste of home! However, we were all left pretty disappointed. I felt as though the restaurant watered down the flavors you’d find in Malaysia.

We ordered a few items on the list: sate ayam, curry mee, char kway teow, yu choy, ayam goreng, rendang, house sambal, and coconut pandan rice.

We enjoyed the sate ayam, rendang, and curry mee. We felt it was true to the dishes in Malaysia.

However, the curry mee, yu choy, char kway teow, ayam goring, house sambal, and coconut pandan rice were bland. We felt as though all of those dishes were watered down and lacked flavor.

The ambience was great but the service was okay. We had a rather large party and called a few days in advance. They seem to be surprised by the amount of people in our parties so they had to scramble to figure out where to seat us. Our waiter was attentive and got our orders right. However, I don’t think anyone came by to refill our water glasses.

Would I recommend this place? Sure but I wouldn’t call it authentic. Overall, the food was watered down and disappointing. The service was average. I would personally recommend the other Malaysian restaurant in Centreville for something more authentic.

Forget eggs benedict, this is the best brunch you'll eat in DC. Come with a group, try it all, share everything.
