Go around to the back entrance of the hotel. Signs will point you. Take a left BEFORE you get to the next building. Looks like a small parking lot. Security will check bags. No strollers allowed or large bookbags. May be left downstairs with the security guards. Arrive early to avoid line. You can skip all the info on the walls and read them on your way out.

The Old Post Office was built in 1899 and features a beautiful hotel now, but also free access (9-4 daily) to the 270ft observation deck in the clock tower, overseen by the National Park Service. The NPS reckons you can see about 12 miles in any direction from the open tower windows. There are NPS guided tours throughout the day and sometimes special events, so check the NPS website for more info before you go. This is important because it does close down periodically for maintenance, and those days are also on the website. We tried to get up there on a weekend and it was a 2 hour wait. I went on a weekday in the afternoon and had the entire tower to myself with one of the awesome ranger’s pointing out all of the cool sites I knew nothing about - it was like a complete VIP experience for free. There is also a museum - signs on a hallway wall really - that explain the history of the area as well as the building itself - definitely a spot to hit.

The Old Post Office in Washington, D.C., is a historical gem that seamlessly combines architectural grandeur with modern functionality. Its iconic clock tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The interior, with its intricate details and vibrant atmosphere, houses an array of shops and eateries. The building's rich history is tastefully preserved, creating an immersive experience for visitors. Whether you're exploring its cultural significance, enjoying the diverse offerings inside, or simply marveling at the impressive structure, the Old Post Office is a must-visit destination that beautifully bridges the past and present in the heart of the nation's capital.

Can't get tickets to the Washington monument, no worries, this place is just as good if not better. Located in the Waldorf Astoria the old post office is free and gives you great views of DC. The door to the tower/elevator is behind the main entrance of the hotel, across the street from the Federal triangle Metro stop, signs will guide you. You will take two elevators to the open air tower and will be provided with some great views of DC.

A fun place to visit, with a view comparable to that from the Washington Monument. The exhibits on the way to the elevators have been revamped a bit since the last administration but need a few more changes, IMO. You take two elevators to the clock tower; once there, you can take your time and admire the city and points beyond.

One of the best kept National Parks in DC. Beautiful view of DC, lots of history. Worth every second of your visit.

A hidden gem on top of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel! We walked by the hotel multiple times but it wasn't until we took another tour did they mention you could get to the top! Access is a little round about, you have to go to the back of the hotel on 12th street. There is security that checks bags prior to entry, some history along the walkway to the elevator, and then 2 quick elevator rides up before you are overlooking the city! Well worth it, NPS staff on site are extremely helpful as well!

Enjoyed the views from the tower. I've been to DC many times and never knew about this place...definitely a hidden gem. No worries you don't have to walk stairs, they have two different elevators that take you to the top.

Welcome to the best view in Washington DC! While many people rightfully clamor to go to the top of the Washington Monument, many overlook the incredible and easily accessible Old Post Office. The initial hallway has some cool information curated by the National Park Service, and rangers are stationed throughout the mini museum and are eager to answer questions and provide information too. While the exhibits are certainly nice and well done, it's the view that really knocks your socks off. The panoramic view from one of the tallest buildings in DC provides an unencumbered view of the Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the National Cathedral. I was blown away. There are no tickets required, and bags are allowed (although they will search them). It's a definite must try!

A beautiful landmark in the heart of DC. It's free for the general public and everyone can go up to the top of the bell tower and have the mesmerizing view of the entire District of Columbia. The place has elevators for easy access to the top floor and the lobby. It's not too crowded at the top but it is narrow there. The view is amazing and it's a destination everyone visiting DC should go to.
