Old Captiva House is a restaurant known for its excellent food and beautiful atmosphere. Although the main entree took a while to be served, the manager was apologetic about the delay. Currently, the restaurant is under refurbishment, and the temporary dining room, called Canoe and Kayak, is located just around the corner in a historic building on the bay at the rear of the property. The dining menu has been reduced in size due to the smaller kitchen, but the food remains top-notch. Guests have enjoyed dishes such as Lobster Bisque, Cedar Plank Salmon, short ribs, and a daily special of scallops with crab cakes. The warm rolls served with oil have also been a hit.
The food is often described as first class, with delicious old fashioneds, appetizers like escargot and caprese salad, and entrees such as the Sea Bass special and grouper. While dessert may have previously disappointed some with soggy crème brûlée, the overall service is described as prompt and efficient. The atmosphere in the new location is quiet and welcoming, though the venue is small enough that conversations can be easily heard. Customers have enjoyed their meals and cocktails, and many appreciate the friendly and knowledgeable wait staff. Despite the higher prices, Old Captiva House continues to hold sentimental value for many, making it a place for special occasions and reminiscing.
