We had been to Sol by the Sea about 4 years ago, and liked it very much. This visit we were a little underwhelmed. We felt the food was not as described; for example, the mojo fritter appetizer had barely a trace of pork in it. It was, however, a tasty rice and black bean fritter. We shared the key's caesar salad. The best part was that they kindly split it on two plates; the salad itself was good, nothing too memorable. My husband had the entree special which was a grilled pineapple slice over coconut rice with a curry sauce and a tandoori "aioli" topping. He added the grilled shrimp at the recommendation of the manager (we believe her to be the manager, as she came over to help us with any questions due to the fact that our waitress was struggling finding "the words" to describe the dish). My husband said the shrimp were an excellent addition, he would have liked more spice to the dish as a whole. I ordered the grilled local mahi mahi, and (thank god) I was pleasantly surprised with the dish. I thought the mahi mahi was cooked superbly and the guava glaze was good. The mashed potatoes were very good! Considering this restaurant was voted #1 restaurant in Key Largo on TripAdvisor our expectations were not met. However, we will consider visiting again in the future after first examining the menu for changes and checking current reviews online.

We went to this restaurant for lunch, but the experience was absolutely unacceptable. When we arrived around 2:00 PM on Christmas Eve, the doorman at the entrance told us that we needed a reservation to get in. That alone was already disappointing, but what happened next was shocking. He forced us to write a positive Google review on the spot, saying that otherwise he would not let us enter the restaurant. This behavior was completely unprofessional, unethical, and extremely uncomfortable. Being pressured to leave a fake review just to get access is unacceptable, especially on Christmas Eve, when people expect kindness and basic respect. This left us feeling angry and disrespected.
