Himalayan Restaurants in Saint Johns, FL

“I love trying different cuisines, but I think one of my favorites is Indian. Unfortunately I got introduced to it in England, and especially London, and none I have had since (except perhaps in a large NE city) have come close.

I was bemoaning that fact to the proprietor of an Indian grocery store I frequent off Baymeadows and Old Kings Roads and he suggested JAX Spice in St. John’s county just off exit 139 on I 95. So tonight we went and I was DELIGHTED. This was possibly one of the best Indian meals I have had anywhere they do not drive on the wrong (well, in truth, Right) side of the road. If I am being honest, not everything was a big hit, but that does not mean it wasn’t authentic, just not what I was expecting.

We started with a veg pakora – it was good but a bit bland for my taste. This may well be the way it is supposed to taste, since I have nothing to compare it to, but I would have liked some more “spice”.

Our mains were Chicken Tikka-Masala and Vegetable Korma. The Tikka was DELICIOUS and to my surprise (I am usually not a vegetarian entrée orderer/liker) I think I almost liked the Korma as much or better.

We also got the Bullet Naan which was delicious, warm and delightfully spicy.

We ended with splitting a Gulab Jamun Mousse. Here again, I have never had this before, but I found it a little too sweet and the dough balls a little too “soaked” in the sugar syrup. The coconut mousse though was super.

The prices were good especially for the amounts received; I mean heck we have tomorrow’s lunch in the fridge. The atmosphere is nice, the building is pleasant and there is plenty of parking. Additionally the staff is very accommodating and quick to offer suggestions if you are unfamiliar with that type of cuisine.

I know that there can be things that happen (like a busy time or an error in an order) but that is anywhere. I think that some of the very negative reviews were based on a single experience. But based on MY single experience my plan is to return often and eat my way through what sounds like a very large and delicious menu. Will everything be GREAT – doubtful, life just doesn’t work that way, but it will be good and that in itself is plenty of reason to go back.“
