Fish was noticeably old and not fried fresh. For $21 bucks, I won’t go back.

Fish market with kitchen for cooked dishes.
Great products. But only outside seating and no option to purchase beer.

My first experience was the best experience. I had leftovers and reheated them, and they were still good.

I recently visited West Fortune Street Fish Market in West Tampa and was pleasantly surprised by how clean the establishment was. There was no strong fish odor, which is always a positive sign when walking into a seafood market. I was told there has been new ownership since around August of last year, and the space reflects effort and improvement.

I ordered the lunch special — blue crabs, whiting, fries, hush puppies, and a drink — for a little over $17. For the price point, the portion size was generous and very affordable.

Let’s start with the highlight: the fries. You can tell the oil was fresh. They were well-seasoned, crispy on the outside with a soft, fluffy interior. The thickness was just right — not too thin, not overly thick. As someone who pays attention to fry quality, these stood out.

The whiting was good overall. The batter had a nice texture, though I personally would have preferred a bit more seasoning in it for deeper flavor. The hush puppies were also solid — nicely fried and enjoyable.

Now, the butter sauce. I had this years ago and wasn’t a fan because it tasted vinegary. I was told the recipe had been fixed and that it’s made with real butter now. Unfortunately, it still had that tangy note that didn’t read as a true rich butter sauce to me. That part just didn’t hit for my palate.

My only real concern came later. Either later that evening or the next day, I experienced stomach issues. I can’t say definitively what caused it, but with seafood, freshness and proper temperature control are critical. Seafood should be consistently held at 40°F or below, and crabs should remain properly iced if not being cooked immediately. Food safety is a priority for me, so that experience does weigh into my rating.

Overall, I’m giving them 3 stars.
The value is there. The fries and hush puppies were strong. The fish was good. But consistency in flavor (especially that butter sauce) and ensuring strict seafood handling practices are essential for long-term trust.

I truly hope the new ownership continues improving, because West Tampa deserves solid seafood spots.

MY FAMILY WON'T BE RETURNING TO THIS MARKET..WE DON'T HAVE $ MONEY $ TO WASTE. WE ASKED FOR THE FISH TO BE FRIED HARD , WELL IT WAS FRIED SOFT N DIDN'T LOOK OR TASTED FRESH FRIED AT ALL , AN THE FRENCH FRIES WAS SOFT AND WET WITH OIL FROM THE FISH LIKE THE FISH WAS DIPPED BACK INTO THE OIL..WE COMPLAINED FOR NOTHING BECAUSE IT DOESN'T MATTER TO THE OWNER HE REFUSED TO RECOOK IT.. AN THE GARLIC BUTTER WAS GARLIC WATER . WE WAS VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED, MY FAMILY WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN ..!!
