4 Best Dive Bars in Athens

Sister Louisa's Church - Athens Bar • $
254 W Clayton St, Athens

“Church is very queer friendly, but I wouldn't say it's a gay bar! Nevertheless, I'm a regular here. Drinks are great! They've got a sangria that is to die for. The bar tenders, Lavarius and Trey also make an amazing whiskey sour.Drinks were relatively cheap. The last time I was here, I had 4-5 drinks and my bill was less than $20! I left a $5 tip.“

The Roadhouse Bar • $

“The Road House is a quite excellent roomy dive bar located in downtown Athens. It has a split personality. During the day, it's mostly grown up townies and the occasional grown up tourist like me. At night, especially late night, it's PACKED with UGA kids, which it was when I ventured there on my first night in town on a Monday night after navigating the Atlanta airport and the long drive to Athens in a rental from there. The bartender on duty when I went during the day was great. She was friendly and knows her craft. Bartending is a lot more than pouring drinks. I will go so far as to say the pouring and making of drinks is almost incidental to the craft, which means maintaining a safe, fun, and welcoming atmosphere that makes people want to come back all while pouring and making drinks, running tabs, ringing up orders, handling old schoolers like me who pay and tip in cash as they go, washing glasses, and so forth. The prices are more than reasonable. For instance, during happy hour (2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.) my usual order of a Makers rocks and a good beer was $10.50. Off happy hour it would be $12.50, which is still more than reasonable in my experience.I will certainly stop in again when I return to Athens next year.Cheers!“

Nowhere Bar Bar • $
240 N Lumpkin St, Athens

“I went there to see and hear Perry D'Andrea sing Sinatra, and enjoyed the other attendees as well. Bartender got creative; loved the concoction she dreamed up for me. The place has barstools and booths, intimate lighting, and a separate area for folks to play pool, all of which allow a good view of the stage. There are special engagements on a wall calendar, and the regular show is on the last Thursday of every month. Y'all come by and set a spell, you never know who you might meet there on any given evening. You might meet a stranger, and leave with yet another friend on your contact list, haha!“

“I was in Athens for work and my coworkers and I were looking for a good wing spot. They are a little inflexible on the sauces you can try, but I was very happy with my selection. The wings were crispy, flavorful, and the cajun fry basket was great too. The beer selection was very diverse as well and had something for everyone.“
