You wouldn't guess that a little coffee shop sharing a space with a butcher/sandwich joint in a cozy corner of the Virginia Highlands area would be the some of the best coffee in the city. But it is.
The space is small, yet very relaxed, even during a Saturday brunch rush. Everyone behind the counter is moving, coffee is being weighed to scale, and the La Marzocco machine is churning away.
I was lucky enough to catch the owner, Connan, working behind the counter. Within minutes we were nerding out about chai espresso drinks like old friends. You can tell he lives and breathes this stuff—and it shows in every sip. His passion for high-quality ingredients and exacting preparation is what gives Academy its soul.
The dirty chai is the best I’ve had. Silky smooth, a nice burn and pleasantly spiced, with a bold espresso kick that doesn’t overpower. It’s comfort and energy in one cup.
Academy Coffee isn’t trying to be like anyone else, and thank heavens for that. It’s a one-of-one kind of place. Thoughtful. Delicious. Intentional. It's what happens when coffee meets dedication.

A buddy of mine had mentioned this place to me and as we are both big into coffee I had to give it a try . I've got to say I wasn't disappointed, I ordered a flat white which was extremely rich and creamy. An absolutely delicious drink. I had also ordered I am Salsa and this drink, this drink went so well not only with evening that was going on in the drink but it complimented the flat white perfectly.
If I had not been given an address I might have overlooked it. I had walked passed it and had to do a double take to make sure I was at the right spot.
Definitely want to try their lunch another day.
Both drinks were amazing. Atmosphere seemed pleasant but being that it doubles as a butcher shop it kinda threw me off . However definitely stop on by and give them a try. The goal will be to go through the summer menu as it looks like they do special drinks for a season or through rotation.

I had the chance to meet Connan, the owner of this coffee shop, in Dublin, when he and his friend were exploring coffee places in the area. They were kind enough to offer me the filters they hadn’t finished during their visit. Thankfully, I accepted—and I got to try one that I ended up loving much more than I've chosen for myself earlier before.
The guys were so nice, and what really stood out to me was how passionate Connan is about what he does. Thanks to a really cool sticker he gifted me, which was related to his coffee shop, I was able to find this place later on.
Ps. sometimes reviews really do matter :)
So if life ever takes me to Atlanta, this spot will definitely be on my checklist.

I’ve been coming to Academy since 2019 when the location was off the Beltline. It’s been incredible to see the business grow and thrive & rightfully so!! They have the best coffee in Atlanta. Connan and his team continue to bring their best with each inspired drink. As someone who is usually scared to go outside of their go to order, Academy does👏🏼not👏🏼disappoint 👏🏼 with their specialty/seasonal drinks. They offer a rotating selection of beans from roasters all over the country & have coffee gadgets and gizmos for purchase as well. You can expect highly trained baristas, consistent pulls & clean🤌🏼latte pours each time. All the baristas are friendly and foster such a great sense of community. Truly a staple VAHI small business.
It's not just the coffee- it's the milk. They use an excellent locally-sourced cow's milk and the drinks that contain milk are a couple of notches above the competition as a result. The available coffees are also unique to the neighborhood. I put them and Perc around the corner as the two best in VaHi.

I had really high hopes for this place because of the reviews, but unfortunately I was really dissatisfied. The shared space is nice and seems to be well utilized for their services. That being said, there are only two seats at the bay windows. I had an iced oat milk latte, and at the first sip I knew there was no fixing it. I kept adding syrup in attempts to cover up the very acidic and stale taste, but none was enough to make it more drinkable. I ended up drinking half of it but tossed the rest. Service was fast, that was a plus. Not the most personable experience, but it seemed that the person receiving my order was very new, so I can understand that part.
