Place phone orders in advance(couple days), especially during holidays. Can get really busy. They have 2 lines, one for walkins and one for phone orders.

West Kurihara

Absolutely the most delicious Mochi and other Japanese confections. These ladies have been a mainstay in Hilo and whenever we are in Hawaii, (even Kona) we will make the drive to Hilo just for their desserts.

I ordered strawberry mochi and several other assortment mochi. The mochi was good but not as good as what people had talked about and not worth it if you have to wait one hour. The girl in the front was sweet and patient but she made me the wrong order and I am too tired to comeback and correct them. The service was too slow and they take a very long time to prepared your order. If you want to go here, I suggest you to just make a phone call order and come around 10 or 11.

Worth the wait! But I recommend calling ahead to place your order, which we did the second time we visited. The strawberry shortcake specialty mochi is amazing, stuffed with fresh strawberry, cream, and shortcake. I enjoyed the taiyaki with cream cheese and jam. The Oreo mochi was also great.

Love love love this place!!! Strawberry mochi and the Strawberry Short Cake are to die for. Everything else is delicious too. The line is always long so if you want to avoid it, make sure to call in early otherwise they have a time to cut off the preorder!

Posting so those who want to know what to order can order!

Seriously though, this place is delicious!

Oh one more thing, they close Sundays and Mondays so order ahead! Oh and you can't carry the strawberry mochi to the mainland!

Love the strawberry daifuku! Even better than some we had in Japan.

Amazing mochi 😍 Always with the line.

Hands down the best mochi I’ve ever had. Every single one we had in the sample/assortment pack was great. It was chewy, soft, and the fillings were nice and sweet. I wish I could get them all the time!

Best strawberry mochi ever!!! I called in my order a few days early and ordered 8 boxes of mochi (most of them strawberry). Unfortunately, all the amounts in each box were incorrect! I counted 8 boxes and didn't bother checking each box since they were very busy. FYI, all the amounts were MORE than they should've been, but not sure if I was charged for the 'extra' mochi or not. You'll hold up the line, but IF you have a big order, I recommend you check each box if you don't want the possibility of getting overcharged.

This place has an amazing variety of mochi and the quality is excellent. The cashier is also extremely friendly and polite. Unfortunately, it’s one of the worst run establishments I’ve ever encountered. Walk-ins, be prepared to wait up to 20 mins per party (I.e. if you’re behind three parties, that’s an hour) as phone in orders cut you in line every 1-2 mins. Then you get to wait another 20 mins to receive your order. There were 8 people working in the back when we came by but only one person working the register. And that one person stops attending to walk-ins every several minutes to service phone in orders. The logical step to post at least two people at the front - one for walk ins and one for phone ins - seems to have eluded them. Compounding the sloth-like turnaround speed is their practice of making mochi from scratch upon order instead of making it ahead of time and then boxing various combinations as needed. We’re not talking ice cream mochi here that could melt, so why not be prepared ahead of time to meet customer demand? Small corrective steps could really improve the service here.

Don't leave the Big Island without some. Lines are long, get there early for best selection.

I've waited 3.5 years to catch this place open on my visits to BI! It didn't disappoint! The fresh strawberry mochi was out of this world!

Amazing taste and value. Expect a long wait/line… maybe around 30 minutes. Strawberry was our favorite! Oreo not so good
