I grew up eating manapua, pork hash, half moon and rice cake from Char Hung Sut. These are just some of my favorites. While I am so hungry to eat all of them now, I can't find anything like Char Hung Sut anywhere. When news got out that they were not going to re-open (from COVID), it broke my heart. I think like a lot of us, it kind of caught us by surprised, no, it can't be. Thank you to the Mau family for serving us your delicious Manapua and dim sum all these many years. Wishing you all the very best. Please be safe and take care.

COVID-19 UPDATE This has been a brutal and impactful year in the history of Hawaii. Not as significant or impactful as the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani and the dissolving of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Not as significant or impactful as the Great Honolulu Chinatown Fire of 1900 which was intentional set to clear and cleanse areas infested with rodents and the plague but quickly went out of control and burned for 17 days, destroying 38 acres of homes and business in Chinatown. Not as significant or impactful as the period from December 7, 1941 to the end of WWII in 1945. But when Char Hung Sut closes its door forever because of COVID-19, you know that this has been a significant and impactful year in the history of Hawaii. Char Hung Sut was the oldest Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. It was opened by Bat Moi Kam Mau in 1946. Oldest because it developed a generation to generation following of patrons that enjoyed their ginormous and tasty "Hawaiian manapua," pork hash, pepeiau, mai tai soo and rice cake. Just so you know, Bat Moi Kam Mau is recognizes as being the creator of the "Hawaiian Manapua." Before her, manapua or bao were small and manini, like the char siu bao you can order at Fook Lam and Tai Pan. The first manapua or bao came from China and were made for Chinese. Mrs. Mau recognized that the Hawaiian people loved food and had big appetites so she came out with this idea that instead of selling two small kine manapua; she would sell one big buggah. People loved her big kine manapua and the "Hawaiian Manapua" was born. This all happened decades before Libby's, Chun Wah Kam and Royal Kitchen; and when people on the other islands asked for manapua, they were talking da big buggahs from Char Hung Sut. I remember when Char Hung Sut was also dine in and had three to four small tables where I would order their sam see mein and mai tai soo. Best sam see mein and mai tai soo in Chinatown. They went exclusively take out sometime in the late 1980's. It is sad for me to see the oldest Chinese restaurant in Honolulu close it doors but this has been a brutal and impactful year. The last and only hot manapua restaurant that is open at 5:30 A.M. is now Royal Kitchen. They make great baked manapua and Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery makes outstanding steamed manapua. The "Hawaiian manapua" is alive and well but from the standpoint of significance and memories, the closing of Char Hung Sut is for me like watching Niagara Falls run out of water. A wonder and landmark of Chinatown so inconceivably coming to an end. I would like to thank the Mau family for the happiness they gave to me and all their loyal patrons with their "Hawaiian manapua." I wish the Mau family much luck, success and good health in the future in whatever venture they pursue. I guess Braddah Iz was right when he said "when time fo them fo go; time fo go."

Dear Char Hung Sut Family - I would like to thank you for all the years you gave to my family. My dad was born in 1927 and started going here when the restaurant opened. He brought me, my sister, and my brother to eat half moon, pork hash, chow fun, gon lo mein, ma tai su, and my mom loved your manapua. We brought your food to the mainland when we visited family and friends who were so ono for just one taste of home. Now I'm 56 and we brought all your delicious goodies to soccer games and potlucks as my nieces and nephews grew up. You will always be missed. Aloha always from my family to yours.

My favorite place for ma tai soo and gon lo mein. Everything was consistently good here. Very special place. Friendly people. My first memories was my popo taking me here as I kid and getting black sugar manapua. An iconic place that unfortunately has not reopened. It was one of my go to places to buy a box of mixed goodies to give as a treat or thank you gift to friends and family. Everyone was happy to get manapua from Char Hung Sut. I wish the Char Hung Sut family all the best and a thank you for making the people of Hawaii's tummy very happy. Aloha and be well.

I'm so heartbroken to read that they have closed?!! This is the only place that I like their pork hash and chow fun. I don't even like chow fun!! And no one else has good pork hash. Wtf!!?! Tell me it's not true. For those saying they should have the courtesy to post a sign or update their recording, I'm sure that is not their priority right now. They, like everyone else, is struggling and suffering. It is good to see they have had such loyal customers, but I don't fault them at all. I do hope they reopen somehow. It has been my favorite since I can remember. Sh$t, I'll even buy their stuff frozen so I have a stash. So sad.
