Southern Love is a true gem, especially in the Southern food desert of Hawai’i. Dishes like fried okra, fried catfish plate, rib plate, shrimp and grits, and peach cobbler are stellar. The sides, including baked beans, collard greens, and homemade cornbread, are exceptional. The buttermilk biscuits are fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside, with the perfect amount of sweetness. They are great alone or smothered in rich, peppery country gravy. The fried chicken is buttermilk brined, tender, and very juicy, with a crisp exterior. Perfectly cooked, buttery shrimp pair wonderfully with the rich and creamy grits. The garlic chicken and waffles offer a brilliant twist on a classic, using slices of chicken reminiscent of Hawaii's garlic chicken instead of plain fried chicken.
Perfect for a casual date night or takeout, the chef engages with diners, creating a wonderful and comforting culinary experience. Southern Love is known for its friendly service, though it is a small operation, so patience is key as dishes may take some time to arrive. With limited parking in front, there is plenty of metered street parking nearby. Southern restaurants are hard to find in Hawaii, and Southern Love more than satisfies. Mahalo!
