Perfect little place hidden downstairs at Asia stix, I went with Nikatama udon, and was not let down. The broth was rich and sweet, with the egg yolk decadent on the noodles I wanted a second serving, but knew I couldn’t finish for how filling it was. Overall staff and restaurant was very clean and the flow of process well organized. Going to hit up this place more!

Udon Yama offers a delightful take on traditional Japanese comfort food, delivering satisfying flavors and expertly prepared dishes that reflect both skill and authenticity. It’s evident that great care goes into every component. The star of the meal was undoubtedly the udon itself—thick, chewy noodles served in a deeply rich and aromatic broth that tasted slow-simmered and full of umami.

I ordered the kitsune udon, and the abura-age (seasoned tofu) was perfectly cooked—lightly sweet, delicately textured, and a wonderful contrast to the savory broth and noodles. The tempura offerings were also impressive in both variety and execution. Items like potato croquettes, shiitake mushrooms, shrimp, and even soft-boiled eggs were available, and each piece was served piping hot with a crisp, golden exterior that wasn’t overly greasy.

However, where Udon Yama missed the mark was in the front-of-house service. There was no greeting upon arrival, and the ordering process felt brisk and transactional. While the efficiency may suit some, a warmer, more welcoming staff presence would go a long way in enhancing the overall dining experience, particularly for first-time visitors unfamiliar with the setup.

That said, the food more than made up for the subdued service. Every bite felt authentic, comforting, and crafted with respect for Japanese culinary traditions. Despite the lack of interaction, Udon Yama succeeds where it truly matters: delivering delicious, decent Japanese fare that speaks for itself.

It’s a great deal—perfect personal portion that actually fills me up. The curry is packed with flavor, rich and satisfying without being too heavy. Total comfort food, and worth every bite. Thick udon noodles, chicken soaked in a curry gravy that clings to everything. It’s hot, messy, slightly sweet, savory, spicy. I slurp, because there’s no dignified way to eat this. Curry splashes, don’t care.

I can’t believe I haven’t left a review yet- but I am ALWAYS craving the cold lemon udon from here 😭 the noodles are so chewy, broth is super refreshing and zesty. Anytime we come to town we have to go here. Even in Japan we were on the hunt for cold lemon udon, it’s the best ever!! All the tempura satisfies whatever snacky craving you have as additional protein. Five stars. And if you haven’t tried the lemon udon- do it.

I liked the noodles better than other Udon places in the area. They really get the chew right. Highly recommended!

This place was okay. The food was good but the portion size wasn't large. We went to Marugame Udon on our first night in Waikiki and they offered twice the amount of food for the same price, and their rice bowls came with a beef broth as well. Would recommend Marugame to get the best bang for your buck

Tasty Udon in Honolulu. Easy access to the restaurant and simple-layback atmosphere.

Amazing. I came 4 times during my stay, it was so good. Prices are reasonable even for large portions. I'm going to miss it. I recommend the Ontama udon. 40 for 2 people with drinks and starters

Had the cold Kake with beef and I thought the it was much better then Marukame udon. The broth tastes less oily and not as salty. It’s also still affordable, better ambiance, no lines, clean tables, and filtered water!
