Really confused by all of the 5 star reviews, especially by those who wrote it is even better than Japan.. The couple who run the restaurant was very nice, but for the price we paid, we expected more for an omakase place. The few pieces that were good were nothing special/different. No one was served water. Overall, it was just an okay experience.

One of the 3 best omakases I’ve had the in US along with Uchi in Austin and Sushi Nakazawa in DC — this might be the best. The place is cozy, so the omakase almost felt like a private dining experience. Every single fish was fresh and delicious. The items are nonstop — amazing dish after dish. My favorite non-nigiri item was a broth steeped with a prawn. No words can further describe the experience — go try it. Thank you, Chef Kijima!

A very cozy Omakase experience! The sushi is super fresh and you can feel the Chef’s creativity. The restaurant allow you to bring in your own beverages, another plus.

Don’t bother, they make it too hard to eat their food 🤷♀️ go to Jinya in Ward instead. They have the inventory to accommodate patrons.
I really enjoy 22 Kailua for dinner and for lunch. I have to say that in my bowl today that included salmon and ahi; the salmon was not properly trimmed. There was skin and slow twitch muscle that messed with the flavor (fishier) and texture. This has never been problem in the past, so I hope they remedy it. If they had a phone number, I would have called instead of writing this review.

You haven't seen attention to detail until you've been here. Superb Japanese mom-n-pop omakase resturant.

Enjoyed the ambiance. Cozy little spot, and it was awesome to watch the chef and his wife(?) work. The omakase featured a variety of mostly seafood dishes that had interesting and enjoyable flavors/textures (which was surprising for me, given my general lack of preference for seafood). Recommend!

Dining at 22 Kailua was nothing short of magical. From the moment we walked in, we were wrapped in a sense of calm elegance—with soft lighting and the gentle hum of happy conversations setting the tone for an unforgettable night. Every dish felt like a love letter to the islands. The ahi crudo was delicate and bright, bursting with flavor in the most graceful way. The butter-poached lobster was rich, soulful, and beautifully balanced—each bite melted like a dream. But it wasn’t just the food. The warmth of the chef, the passion in every plate, and the attention to detail made it feel personal—like a special evening crafted just for us. 22 Kailua isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a culinary experience full of heart. One you’ll remember long after the last bite. Pure love. 5 stars. 🌺
