We were part of a graduation party of 12. Our reservation was honored promptly at 1:30. The wait staff seemed very confused— mixing up drink orders, plates , bills and credit cards. There was only 1 other table (6 ) at the time. I'm sure all seats were reservations so they had to know how many they would be serving. Ran out of the lunch paella. The soup 2 of us ordered was room temp and very under seasoned. The panini was so hard and dry you could barely bite it , never mind trying to cut it with a knife. I would have to give both service and food a -1. Very disappointing .
The restaurant has Spanish style servings with the tapas and the paellas but it really isn't Spanish food. It is more local food and ingredients with a Spanish style of cooking and serving. I know it may sound like the same but it is not. I have traveled through Spain extensively and I can tell you this isn't Spanish food. That being said, the food is very good. I had the paella, the albondigas tapa and the morcilla tapa, they were all very delicious and tasty. I feel the prices are a little elevated but it's still worth a visit. The sangria is quite good and they put the right amount of wine in it. The service is also one of the highlights of the restaurant, they make you feel welcome. The artwork inside is also a nice touch.
Our drinks were good and the bartender was efficient. Food was decent. All the other wait staff was unprofessional and rude. Loudly complaining about customers and moaning about having to answer the phone even though it was slow. We were the only customers sitting inside so it was really awkward. Overall bad first experience.
We were so happy to hear that Devotay now serves breakfast. What a great alternative to the standard typical greasy breakfast fare! We loved the chorizo eggs benedict and actually ordered a second one halfway through breakfast because it was so good. Will probably be our go to place to take out of town guests for breakfast!
My favorite restaurant in Iowa City. New owners (2018) have made subtle but welcome updates to the interior. Menu is always thoughtful and full of local ingredients, from grains to greens to meat to beer. Soups are the best anywhere. Cocktails are prepared with lots of attention to detail. Servers are knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive without being pushy. Best spot in IC for a drink, light meal, and people watching with that someone special or a small group of good friends.
